HerStrawberri's Journal, 13 September 2011

Well I'm a little bummed today. Yesterday while i was at school, I over heard some nursing students talking in my bio class and they were talking about how there is a two year waiting list to get into the clinical part of my program. That's two years AFTER I'm done with my prereq classes. UMMmmm...2 years? So, I started asking them questions and they said they are trasnferring to this other college in my town that doesn't make you wait. The program is harder, but better. So i looked at that college and it seems really nice from the website. BUT. All the students are young. Am i to old to go to an actual college? i mean, I'm IN college...but it's a community college. My grages weren't real good in high school, so would that hinder me? Granted i would wait until I'm done with this year and transfer next fall, but I'm still concerned. Has anyone done that before? I don't mean to sound like an idiot, I'm just not sure how it works. i requested info from the school and to have an admissions counsler contact me...so I guess I can ask all of these questions to them. I'm just really discouraged now. i can't wait 4 years then go through another 2 years to finish my clinicals. =(

Sorry not diet realted. I'm just sitting here thinking about this and needed to talk about it.

You are never too old for college. The university I go to has ages ranging from 17 - 55 (or older - I suck at guessing how old ppl are). I don't know how it works in the US but I know In Can if you are out of school longer you become a "mature" student, and the grades matter but not as much as they did when you were 17 - 21 so your highschool grades may not play a huge role. I would check the school out and see if you like it, do not get discouraged things will be ok. What school are you currently going to?

I agree, you just need to talk to someone. You are never "too old" for an actual college as long as you don't mind being surrounded by younger kids. My undergrad generally was all younger people with a few (like maybe one in a class) non-traditional students. There is nothing wrong with that, it is just whether or not you mind. If you grades are good now, they should transfer over and that shoudl show the college you are academically ready. You just need to talk to the counselors and ask all your questions. That's what they are there for!!

Thank you Shanna and starbird. I'm going to contact them and see what they say. Pixi, I'm going to Milwaukee Area technical College. The college I'm thinking about going to is Alverno College. I just read a bunch of stuff on their website and to transfer in from another College you have to have a 2.5. That won't be an issue as I have to have at least a 3.0 for my current program. I know I may be getting all worried a little early, but i have alot riding on the line here and I want to make sure I make the best decisions for my career. I can't wait 6 years for a 3 year program.

Oh I totally understand, I would be starting to think about it now too, because honestly time flies and you don't want to be stuck waiting when you could be in the class and done with out waiting. I am sure everything will get sorted out.

Exactly. I'm going to look at other schools as well, but i really think Alverno is the way I'm going to go. I figure finish out this year, and start the application process at the new school early so I make sure I have everything I need. Thanks for listening Pixi! I know i tend to be a worry-wort. =)

Oh, please. I went back to school as a "mature student" and I sure as hell got WAY more out of it than I did when I was studying straight from high school. And who cares if there are heaps of young kids? Half of them will flunk out, the other half will get halfway through their life before they realise that what they're doing is making them miserable. You have the life experience and maturity to choose your path, and you shouldn't let yourself be intimidated by a bunch of puppies. xx

You are so not to old as the others say never to old LOL...if you do end up waiting to transfer next fall, make sure that what you have already will transfer over, or you will have to do them again that could add another year for you. But age brings so many things with it as others have said, I am 57 and still learning, I go to lots of classes for my job, I actually do more than I need to, but just love to learn. Can't ever know to much...just a funny thought. I don't think people think of age once you are in college, you will have friends of all different age groups. Let us know all you find out, hey at least you have found out now and can make an informed choice instead of finding out at the end of your year. Best of luck.

I say do it! There were a lot of "older" people in my paralegal studies courses, and I loved learning more from them than my same-aged peers. It was nice that they brought life experience in with them to help apply to the situations that we were learning, and additionally they seemed more interested in actually studying. Do it!! Even if you're the oldest person in the room (and I promise you won't be), at least you're doing something to better yourself. Good luck!!

Thank you so much everyone! I'm def going to transfer in the fall. I'm going to finish out this year and then transfer. I think it's the best thing for me. besides not having to wait for my clinicals, the new school has a more individulized learning in the classes. They also have smaller classes. I think all around it will be a better choice for me. Thank you everyone for reading and commenting! =)

Good Luck! There are many schools that offer nursing programs, so you don't need to limit yourself to just one, and age doesn't matter at all. Just get the absolute best grades you can possibly get so you can beat everyone else and get in your program asap. Many people don't get into their first choice programs the first time they apply because they are very competitive. I applied for a Radiologic Technology program last year and wasn't excepted, (with a 3.8 GPA) so I had to wait another year before I could reapply. Fortunately I was excepted this year and start classes in two weeks. Just be prepared to possibly have to wait. If you work hard, and you really want it, it will be worth it.

You are definitely not too old to go to a "real college". You can do anything you put your mind to. As for your grades not having been great in high school, there are tons of reasons that could have been. Your focus is probably different now. Lord knows that your drive is!
