I went kayaking yesterday for the first time! It was over 100 degrees, but the water was wonderful. I live in northern Arizona in a mountain town, with many creeks, rivers, and lakes nearby. I don't think I did too bad as a beginner, and we went around three miles down the river, which took about two hours. Not a bad work out at all! My arms and shoulder blades definitely feel it today.
