Good Friday Morning & MAY 1st,Buddies!!
Why should we celebrate EVERY pound lost (banished)????

So many of us (including myself) at times have been greatly disappointed with
ONLY losing a pound or half a pound. Today I want to try to help us all
appreciate the MAJOR EFFORT that goes into that result.
I am going to “sketch out” some general observations and use “round numbers” for the SAKE OF ILLUSTRATION.
Please understand, I know the math of weight loss is at best an “inexact’ science.
It is further complicated by our greatly varying body sizes, shapes, and individual metabolic rates.
First, Weight loss theory says to lose a pound of stored fat, we must BURN 3,500 MORE calories than we eat & drink.
If a person is maintaining their weight on 2,000 calories a day, in order to lose a pound in a week, they must CUT their calories by 500 per day. While this is doable, anyone who has tried it has discovered IT IS NOT EASY.
2. In general terms, a person will burn about 1 calorie for every 25 steps walked (for me personally that was a major bummer to hear that in class …LOL…of course, the heavier we are, the MORE calories we will burn.
So, for our illustration, this person walks about 2,500 steps (approx.) each mile and burns about 100 calories….So if they manage 5 miles per day between exercise walking and their “daily routine” walking…They are now burning an extra 500 calories a day walking (if they were NOT walking ANY before.)
RESULT? They can lose ONE pound by the end of the week through exercise.
So if our “imaginary person” cuts their diet 500 calories per day AND walks 5 miles per day faithfully, they could reasonably expect to lose 2 pounds per week…HOWEVER, that is assuming there are NO DAYS when they got “off plan”.
(I already hear the groans out there…LOL…because as we ALL know…everyone gets “off plan” sooner or later.)
AND this journal post has not even MENTIONED the weeks that real life people have done everything I mentioned above AND NOT LOST ANYTHING or even GAINED !!!!
So, my dear FS buddies, the NEXT time you step on the scale and show ANY loss, and especially a loss of a WHOLE POUND…please do yourself and ALL of us a BIG favor. Celebrate!!! Celebrate ENTHUSIASTICALLY!!! Because every pound lost (banished) is GONE!!!! AND you have EARNED the right to CELEBRATE!!!
Thanks for listening AND Thanks for caring!!!

Spot on! Thank you for this, I always kind of felt like a failure for a 1 pound loss, now I will celebrate instead!

It amazes me how little the body needs to maintain itself. At 180, previously 235, my body needs about 25% less calories than it needed to 'maintain' itself (read chubby) at 235. It also means that since my maintenance at the level is 25% less than I used to eat, to continue losing I need to hit about 35% to 40% less calories. Is that the worst part? Not really. It means that I can never go back to eating the way I used to. Do I miss it? Absolutely. Would I go back? No thank you.

there is only one "glitch" in your tale. An average body cannot ""use" more then 0.8 kilo of stored fat in a week. So if you lose more, you may have lost muscle. The trick is to finetune your diet to your exercise so your body has time and nutrition to use the stored fat as a fuel.

I keep positive by looking at the weight loss graph, it may wiggle up and down but the overall trend is down, so I still celebrate even though I gain a bit sometimes. Keep looking at tbat graph!

Also your true loss may seem to fluctuate for several reasons, like salt intake, how quickly your body releases waste or even if you have a scale that is not top of the line accurate.

Awesome journal entry SST. Great information. Makes my perspective of those "slow" weeks come into better focus & increases my appreciation of the gravity of the single pound week. This will help me very much when dealing with the ebb & flow of the Idiot Box. This is the type of information that will help keep people on the climb. Thanks!

Great journal entry and your right what most nutritionists do say is on a 1500 calorie a day diet with exercise you can and should lose 1-2 lbs. That is very safe and healthy. BTW on my local news channel they were talking about seeing more and more people in the hospital because for some dumb reason they thought the TAPE WORM diet was they way to eat what they wanted and still lose weight. The only worm this guy is eating is going to be the one at the bottom of a tequila bottle it is supposed to bring you luck if you get the shot with the worm.

Yuck is right-That is what I thought when I seen it on the news is who in their right mind would eat tape worm pills they bought on the internet

I agree with Pinkmoo - the overall trend is helpful to observe - down is down!
