Deb_N's Journal, 29 March 2015

Hi, everyone! Hope you are well. I mentioned on a buddy's journal that in the summer I am going on vacation, and we will have restaurant meals. I'm sure I can choose good foods for lunch and dinner, but what to do about breakfast? I usually eat a bowl of oatmeal with add ins, like 1 Tablespoon unsalted sunflower kernels, 1 Tablespoon wheat germ, 1 Tablespoon ground flax seed, and 1 Tablespoon unsalted peanuts. I don't want to take oatmeal and add ins in my luggage, so what could I eat for breakfast instead of oatmeal? Any suggestions?

Geez...am I the only "bad" one here? My thought is Its a Vacation! Enjoy. Just eat in moderation and if you blow it one day, be frugal the next. I can go back to the straight and narrow when I am off vacation. Hmmm...but again, thats just me.

Why can't you eat oatmeal at restaurants? I do it all the time.

Kattay.... I know what you mean, but when we go out I still look for places that has a variety of foods to choose. This weight loss thing. I just try to totally avoid Wendy's, etc.

Depends on where you are staying but a lot of hotels have oatmeal, so you could take your add ins and still be fine,

You are right ClassicRocker. I don't do fast food places anymore. Kinda funny, when someone says "restaurant" I think Olive Garden, Outback, Cracker Barrel, Roma's, China Garden, etc. Haven't wrapped my head around calling a fast food place a restaurant like McDs, Wendys, Burger King, Hardees, etc. I'm really picky on choosing whole foods that don't have a lot of unidentifiable ingredients. I choose steak and veggies when possible or broiled seafood with simple sides.

I'd have to take my own. I do Bob's Red Mill Organic.

As for breakfast, leftovers from the previous night would work for me. I like halving my dinner at the beginning of the meal. You can eat it for brunch the next day.

Wow. Excellent idea.

I'd scout ahead of time; if you're staying at a hotel, some will do grocery shopping for you. You could specifically ask them to buy the items you want, and if you don't eat them all, you could donate the leftovers to a homeless shelter/food pantry. It will be cheaper than buying the food at the restaurant, and healthier, most likely! :) If the restaurant meals look unhealthy, you could try the boiled egg/cereal option. Are you looking for carbs and fats in the morning vice proteins? What are your goals?

I'm probably wrong, But I go for the Adkins diet when I am dinning out-Well most of the time! :) Omelet's works for me! :)

I usually get a fruit and cottage cheese plate or fruit and yogurt with granola on top. Most restaurants (and fast food places) now offer a fruit and yogurt bowl.

Thanks, everyone! Good answers. I thought you all are going to tell me to eat a bagel or a protein bar. Or both. ;) At home I am calm because I don't have all the extra food choices. Right now I waver back and forth about being scared to be around so much food and then telling myself I lost 100 pounds, so I said NO a lot in the past and I should not worry.

Yes, I say go with the fruit/veggies/oatmeal/eggs that may be on the menu. If they don't, then maybe something off the kid menu if they'll let you.

If you want oatmeal in the morning Starbucks has a steel cut kind. They also have a dried fruit and nut add on. Not sure on where your vacationing but when I was eating carbs this is where we are breakfast while traveling.
