Strength & Support

I am going to have a busy day today. I have to take my sister to a doctor's appointment and then go grocery shopping. The weather is suppose to be 81° this afternoon so it should be a great day for walking. Hopefully I will get a good walk in today as well.

While my weight is dropping, I feel like I need to reintroduce strength training in to my exercise routine so I can gain some muscle. My main exercise right now is walking. Is there any other exercises I should try that might give my body some definition, especially my stomach?

I wanted to say that since I have joined FatSecret I have learned so many things about myself in my weight loss journey and have been supported by some great people. Support from others is so important, especially when losing weight. From the moment we make the decision to lose weight, people will have advice and opinions on the decisions we make, some positive and some negative. I have definitely heard my share of the negative opinions. But the people who give words of encouragement help make a lousy day feel much better. While I do not make my day based on someone's kindness or criticism, it does make me happy to see that kindness is still around. I just wanted to say thank you. I hope everyone has a great day!

I'm trying to find a way to tone my belly that won't hurt my damaged back, so I'm interested in any replies that you get. And I don't know about you, but my butt is the weirdest shape and lumpy since fat doesn't go away all evenly. My daughter says squats help that, but if I squat it will take more than my cane to get me up lol. Today's strength training: rearranging the sunroom/living room furniture.

Gingin: Wonderful that you are getting some of that much needed support here. I have found the same thing - it's been my WOE lifeline and helps me to keep my focus! I hope you have a great day!

I am SO impressed after looking at your journey. How inspiring! Thanks for sharing this observation. You have a great day, too. You deserve it!

If you don't like the gym you can do calisthenics at home, they can also shape your body. Watch some exercise vids on you tube for inspiration.

You have done wonderfully! If you do not want to pay for a gym, maybe in vest in a couple Jillian Michaels DVDs - some people dislike her but her workouts are thorough and will help you build muscle.

I love your chart! You are moving consistently down! Awesome!! I keep my 8 lb hand weight and 10 lb kettle in eyesight. While waiting for the microwave to do its thing, I either do weights or steps. None of that "out of sight, out of mind"! Now I have gotten myself trained, I automatically start my steps or weights when I start the microwave :) I throw in a few squats before I pull out the food/drink. Every bit helps and it does add up. No matter what you decide, try to make it fun!

Have you tried HIIT programs. I have done cardo and resistance with bands. They will kick your butt helping you gain muscle, strength and cardio in 20-30 min. GO-YA!

I am always so amazed when I check my email and see that you make daily entries on here. You are a true inspiration to me! I really need to get back to doing this, too. I use to journal everyday when I was on weight watchers, but I did that on their site. I do believe I will start journaling on here, again, tomorrow. Thanks Gingin40's.

Such a great entry, Gingin! As far as strength training, I do the weight machines at the gym and I do some at-home calisthenics. I looked up calisthenics/circuit training workouts online and created my own routine. For my core and abs specifically, I do planks, crunches, sit-ups, ab bicycles, and I take a dance class at the gym once a week which incorporates some belly dancing. Hope this helps :)

Gingin you are doing great, some strength training hmmm, your body is the best piece of exercise equipment you already own. Push-ups are good, f you struggle with them you can start on your knee, or even a wall. If you have to gallon jugs fill them with water they should weight about 7 lbs apiece you can do curls, overhead presses, standing flies. As someone mentioned ab work hurts their back if this is the case for you do crunches and sit ups on your bed you are still working the same muscles just with lots of cush under you. Kettle Bells are amazing. Or pull-ups, tricep dips? There are many things you can do Yoga will build strength also.

I agree Gingin, it's not just a weight loss journey but a journey of discovery.

Yoga is a great gentle way to start, there's lots of videos on YouTube and it can give you nice strength and definition while addressing core weaknesses. Plus it's fun and doesn't feel so much like work, until you are done anyway lol.

Ditto what WFN said.

I love using Fitness Blender workouts at home. They're free and you can search for core focused workouts at whatever level you're ready for. Although they will be the first to say that a toned tummy is about overall body strength and proper weight--that you really can't just tone a "trouble spot" without working the whole body. But they've really helped me and I never liked fitness of any kind.

The fitness blended kettle ball ones are pretty good, I add some music though,
