I find sometimes that my greatest success with a challenging goal is a little jujitsu. When it comes to dietary changes, rather than looking at it as a time of deprivation, I look at it as I no longer want to harm my body by eating foods that cause damage, and offer little nourishment. I am taking care of my body and myself by eating foods that give me the nourishment and energy to live my best life. It is an act of love, not an act of denial. I want to be around for as long as possible, living the best life I can. It is easier for me to make my changes more permanent with this subtle but powerful shift in how I think about what I eat. This former sugar junkie is able to just say "no" with very little effort. And I now LOVE brussel sprouts! Go figure. :-)

How do you find your motivation to stick to your plan? Do you do this kind of psychological jujitsu?

You are speaking my language. When I went to massage school I met some women who were always eating fancy veggies and fruit that I normally wouldn't buy because they were too expensive. They fed their bodies with good food because they knew they deserved it. I'll spend money on good chocolate, good beer, good coffee...but NOT on superior fruits and veggies?? They had a self love that I did not yet possess. Now I look at food as a way to shape the healthy body I desire. I prepare almost all of my family's food from scratch. It feels good to know what's in your food and know that you are providing body with nourishment and not creating an environment where your body fights what you feed it. It's a shift in perspective, yes? Isn't it interesting that once your body gets used to feeling good you really notice the effects of eating a ton of sugar? I experience a hangover type feeling if I eat a ton of sugar. Cheers to self love lady!!

That's a really great attitude! I've never researched jujitsu, though it does sound a good discipline. Sounds like you exchanged the bad sugar habit into the good Brussels sprout habit. I believe its easier for you brain to change a habit than to create a new one. For me I'm motivated by trying to do everything I do just 1% better every day including what I eat. For example I now add uncooked spinich to green salads, making salads more than 1% better (always avoided buying spinich because I didn't like it cooked, but recently discovered I love it raw). Life's a game! Just trying to make it fun!

Yes, Yams! and nb girl, you are absolutely right. It is a series of small changes that add up. I love to refer to them as baby steps. Keep making baby steps, and one day you look back and realize how far you have come.

Yes! A very good attitude to adopt. I think of the big picture and how it is a "lifestyle" not a temporary diet.

The style of massage that I first learned was called kodenkan Japanese restorative therapy for Jujitsu. I still do that massage and I learned it in 1992.

The motivation that I find to stick with my plan is , to get the weight off of my new hip replacements, so its easier on me. Also my boyfriends family is coming over from England at the end of the month , I haven't seen them since 2009, also I haven't met his mom before ,she is coming with his sister and brother in law, I met them before , but not the mom. The last time that I saw his brother-in-law , the brother-in-law, told me I was fat. That's my motivation.

I am not looking forward to it, I told my boyfriend when they come over from England I would like to stay home and he can go see them on his own.

I love the attitude about good food and nourishment. It's so true. I go through my fridge and freezer now and look for ingredients to make something new and healthy for my DH and me. I am getting better at planning meals and shopping with a list, too. The more I can get into making new dishes, or the tried and true dishes that we both like, the better I feel about cooking and food preparation. I am not a natural cook ... I have to have a recipe to follow. LOL!
