RoeCampy's Journal, 05 April 2014

Today so far is not a good day for me! First I decided to go on the scale 2 days earlier and I gained another pound! I have been eating so good and exercising! Also on this diabetes diet and my yoyo for carbs for another disease,{need carbs for Porphyria, a hereditary blood disease) and one of my foods I love to eat that craves my sweet tooth and helps me stick to my diet by enjoying it soooo much is Oikos fat free vanilla greek yogurt... but sometimes it affects my sugar, like today! My sugar after eating it spiked to 289! Not good. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to make the yucky plain yogurt taste like vanilla without the carbs? Also, I'm very scared. This just happened to me, my pancreas just decided to stop producing insulin after so many pancreatitis attacks since in my teens. It first affected the way I digest fats so my triglycerides are so high which in turn also causes pancreatitis attacks! And all this is from the Porphyria. Now they did tell me eventually it will give me diabetes but I didn't think this fast. I had it for almost a year without knowing it. My eyes are so bad now and my feet hurt and are numb on the toes. When I started putting 2 and 2 together last week, I tested my sugar and it was 592!! So now on my second type of meds and seem not working that good either. Any help on eating, suggestions, anything I would so appreciate. My primary doc gave me info and it says for meals I can have between 40 to 60 carbs and snacks 15 to 30 carbs. I see an endocrinologist on the 23rd. Thanks guys for all ur support ;)

Roe, I'm so sorry you're going thru all of this! I've seen a couple posts recently about diabetes and I know so very little about it but it sounds tricky to manage. Re: the yogurt flavoring - I had a couple thoughts. One would be to add vanilla extract (the REAL good stuff) and sweetener (Stevia). I make hot milk for myself occasionally using those things and it's really good. The other is that I've seen a couple companies that make flavored liquid stevia drops (do a search on amazon for french vanilla stevia). I've never tried either of these so I don't know how they might taste. Also, I don't know if Stevia is a good thing or bad thing for diabetics. Hoping you find some solutions soon!

It might be wise to see a nutritionist to help you set up a plan to help you (if you can afford it). If not, be proactive and do research on the best foods for you. I know there is a magazine with recipes for diabetes. The recipes look really good. Vanilla and a sweetner might help the yogurt taste like vanilla (but find out if you can use sweetners). The most important thing you can do for yourself is to read and educate yourself. Good luck!

thank u so much suzi... i will look for those magazines and yes i can have stevia but splenda and those yikes who wants those in your body., the latest research revealed that splenda does something to your body's natural function to lower and raise sugar and suggests it could be insulin resistant! read more here: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/06/03/splenda-blood-sugar-sucralose-insulin_n_3362122.html

Roe, I drink a LOT of coffee and tea (more than I should!) and used to go thru a lot of splenda. After I joined here and started reading more about it I switched to Stevia. Again, I don't know how approved it is for diabetics but a few articles tend to agree that it is (see this link for one http://www.webmd.com/diabetes/features/stevia-good-substitute-sugar). I've been using the Organic Stevia from Trader Joe's. It is supposedly made from the stevia rebaudioside which is supposedly sweeter than the other one and tends less toward bitterness. From what I've read, many of the other Stevias on the market are either highly processed or mixed with a base material that makes it less costly. I'm really picky about sweeteners and I've been pretty happy with the Stevia. If it's safe for you, you may want to give it a try.

Hi Roe, your are on the right way. You look at you and started your diet, and you will find out, what is good for you. For you it is very nessessay to loose weight, more than for all of us. Start to do sport: Go for a walk each day, first some steps, and every day a little farer. So more you loose weight, so better will be your diabetes. My husband is a diabetiker too, he goes with the dog about one hour = 350 calories. And a 100g greek yoghurt 2 % fat in Germany has 4,9 g carb = 4,9 sugar. Rue, we can!

yes Mops und drops we CAN!! lol walking is a bit hard for me I do have lupus but if I can get my husband to come with me that would be good. I am also doing the brazen ab challange but it is not moving about... I will try my best ;)

For the yogurt, it has been some time since I had dairy, but you might want to add stevia (1-2 scoops to taste) and vanilla extract. I use stevia for my sweetener, so it might taste good. Stevia does not give sugar spikes if I remember correctly. You can do this.

hmmm i will try it tonight! thx

there is also a yogurt company from Canada called iiogo, all natural ingredients and sweetened with Stevia. You can also make your own yogurt and infuse it overnight with a real vanilla bean and then play with the quantities to get your desired level and as Bruchaleat said, Stevia., but be careful not to use too much, it is very intense and will become bitter if you use too much.

I dont know if this helps but i put blueberries in my natural sugarfree yogurt for taste and they are supposed to be good for keeping insulin level steady.

If there is a Mexican store close to you they might have it.

thanks I will check but so far I did one packet of truvia, 1 tsp brown sugar, and 1 tsp pure vanilla extract and its pretty good. and instead of 29 carbs a cupful from the vanilla oikos fat free, it is 14 carbs with all that in the plain yogurt! yay
