haesel's Journal, 08 March 2014

Today was a bit of a nasty day, food-wise. No exercise (Saturday is always a rest day for me) and ate far too much nonsense--Bienenstich, double chocolate cookies, grilled cheese sandwich . . . At least the rest was, for the mostpart, healthy and I was on my feet for a large part of the day.

It JUST occurred to me this evening that I've failed to deduct calories from nursing. Since I'm still breastfeeding, an extra five hundred calories are lost a day. I'm still extremely uncertain how many calories I actually need to consume in general.

Also, I spoke with a nutritionist who suggested that I minimize cardio workouts and increase time spent lifting weights to build up muscle mass. However, I'm taking that with a grain of salt, considering I have a half-marathon to run in October and am rather fond of running and bicycling now. Plus, I'm starting a new lift regime on Monday, so I'll wait and see how that develops.

I was extremely excited to find a Crossfit gym around here. However, the membership fee is a hundred and twenty five dollars a month, so there's no way that's going to happen any time soon.

Wow, that's crazy. I've been hearing so many people talk about cross-fit, and I've read about it, but haven't quite gotten to any point of seriousness in considering it. But I had no idea it was that expensive. Owwie. Anyway, best of luck in working through the cravings. You are right about the nursing calories, so you've got some freebie cals. :D I know you didn't ask, but if you were interested in my opinion of the muscle thing, your nutritionist is right. You really won't gain much muscle with running or bicycling... maybe a little. But those activities are really great for leaning muscles out, and they do build a bit -- give the leg muscles some nice definition. Something like knee bends will help build those muscles from home up, especially if you're holding some weight while you do them. Just don't go down too far, it isn't great on the knees.

I think your nutritionist has sound advice there. On the other hand, if you love the cardio, you could just up your food intake some to accomodate the extra calories from that an nursing. Maintenance of muscle mass has many benefits, but we all have things we love. It's running for you - lifting for me. (I'm right by the way. ;) ) In my dictionary running has 'boredom' listed as a synonym. Crossfit? I'd be a puddle on the floor.

Thanks for the input, guys! Crossfit sounded like a lot of fun, but the price sort of crushed that little dream for now -.- I do do (heh) my share of weights twice a week in addition to all the cardio. Could I perhaps just increase my protein intake and calories, and be fine with that, as opposed to actually having to cut back on running if I want to gain muscle mass?

Did the nutritionist give you a specific reason why they thought you should drop cardio? If it was just to conserver calories, there would be no harm in just increasing those. A little more protein should protect your muscle mass. The tendency is for massive cardio to cut muscle mass. (Lots of 'mass' words there.) Half and hour every other day should be fine. You love it. It likely is the thing that draws you to the gym. I'd be afraid to drop it, because you may have less desire to go do anything.
