moopie321's Journal, 21 January 2020

I’ve been on FS since 4/2012, and active in the community since 2018. I’ve noticed a split in the personalities of those who are successfully heading towards their goals and those who are stuck in a weight lose/gain cycle and not close to goal.

I *THINK*:

Those with impulsive personalities can inadvertently undermine their own health and self-sabotaging their progress. People who are impulsive are constantly starting new, failing to handle criticism well, binge eating, binge drinking, and escalating confrontations. They cannot understand the consequences of their actions and control their urges. Having poor self-control can lead to self damaging behaviors like binge eating/drinking/or drug use because they use it as a coping mechanism.

How many times have we seen Member A get upset at Member B for posting a food pic that isn’t in Member A’s diet but they don’t want Member B to post about it? Impulsive personalities can allow something as simple as a food pic to trigger a week long food binge. And member A will blame member B for their binge instead of taking responsibility for lacking self control. It sounds unreasonable and excessive but it has happened.

How do we counter impulsiveness?
1. Go visit a therapist. They will arm us with plenty of tools to “think before we act” so we know how to handle the next 🍰 , 🍕 , 🍔 trigger post. I went to therapy and look how normal I am now? 😂😂😂 (before my words get twisted, I am not making fun of those with disorders, just bringing some levity into a serious subject). I can identify triggers and not respond to them now. 😉😉😉
2. Practice mindfulness. I ask myself all the time when I feel like I need to go ape 💩 over food. Why why why? I need to make myself aware of my environment and what is contributing to it so I am not acting out in response to it. Am I hangry 😖? Am I thirsty? Is it that time of the month 🗓 ? Did I get enough sleep 😴 ? Is there work 👩🏻‍💻or home 🏡 stress? Am I jealous? Do I have food envy? It empowers me to make logical decisions. I also ask friends for their opinions too, to check to see if my feelings are reasonable or craycray 😜
3. See a psychiatrist, sometimes it’s a physiological reason... it’s genetics, it’s hormonal imbalance, whatever it is sometimes we need medication to help with our impulsiveness and maintain balance. ⚖️

Let’s find our balance and reach our goals. 💪🏻💪🏻💪🏻

I study all behavior, analyze it, I look at the topography and I enjoy redirecting mal-adaptive behavior. It is a fascinating field! You never get bored!

I totally agree with this thread. Food really wasn’t my issue it was my issues that caused food to be my issue. I’m good now, my shit is together lol. But it wasn’t a pretty road to where I am. Yikes.

SwedishBlondie, I’m glad it’s together now. I was reading earlier when your 💩 wasn’t together... food poisoning is no fun. I surround myself with strong role models like you ladies who have overcame obstacles to be the beautiful confident women you are and I learn from you all.

I'm in education. I was curious about what qualifications and level of professional expertise you might have in the areas discussed in this post and thread's comments.

Rosio19 Your degree sounds exciting. It is interesting to see the pendulum swing from the behaviorist lens decades ago to the cognition approach and now coming back and reintroducing behavioral perspectives. I would think your background and understanding nutrition would be a super powerful combo. Good Luck and hope you finish soon and you pass the test and get your clinical hours.

Indeed, as are we all. Probably wise to keep it really general and in the lay realm like that, lest anyone incorrectly infer they're being diagnosed!
