It is a lot easier to exercise when you are "playing" instead of "exercising." Duration and intensity are easier to maintain when you are doing something fun instead of something that feels tedious.
I'm in Atlanta, GA (800 miles from home) this week. Working out in a hotel gym just isn't something I've been able to get into. Not sure why exactly, but it is much less appealing to me than even going to a regular gym (which is less appealing to me than working out at home.)
When packing to fly down I packed a bunch of geocaching stuff in my backpack. I've been taking the backpack with to class and each day I have been walking at part way back to the hotel, or caching the shuttle to the hotel then heading out geocaching from there. I have been seeing parts of Atlanta very few tourists (or even most residents) ever see.
Tonight after class was the maiden voyage for an app I just downloaded last night. It tracks route, speed, duration and altitude changes. It also calculates calories burned based on all that data and your height/weight.
According to the app, I spent 2-1/2 hours searching for caches. I ended up walking 4-1/3 miles and I burned 4,477 calories. (I found 3 out of 5 of the caches I looked for too by the way.)
I have never gone that many miles on a treadmill or elliptical in my life. And I've never burned that many calories on any kind of exercise equipment. Sure my feet and legs are tired tonight, but it was far "easier" than "working out."
