I'm reading The Obesity Code by Jason Fung. So far, I'm thinking this should be classified in the horror section of a bookstore, not health and wellness, lol. I hope it has a happy ending.

I'm reading the part about all of the many studies that have been done that PROVE the calories in / calories out theory is false and yet it continues to be widely accepted. It's talking about how low fat, calorie restricted diets just don't work because the body compensates for the lower intake by slowing down the metabolism, and I'm thinking, well, am I already doomed? But I haven't finished yet, so no spoilers!

Dr Atkins thought it took more energy input for the ketogenic WOE than other diets; but in the last 5 years, the keto proponents have admitted it's not so. When did Dr Fung publish his book? I think CICO is true in theory; but in the real world, how do you figure the "calories out" side of the equation? I asked Diablo and johncip; they told me it's trial and error. Hmmmm. For me, as a T2 diabetic, CICO is necessary but not sufficient for weight loss: I also must restrict carbs and moderate protein. Otherwise my body continues to produce excess insulin, exhibit insulin resistance; my blood sugar goes up.

Yeah body adjusts how it deals with food. It may store lots of it or not. It does not burn food like the imaginary ovens that decide how many calories there are and what we read on labels. Explains why it is hard to lose weight and easy to regain it. gs I think Atkins was right. It feels right for me. we have had no long term clinical trials to test it. But maybe one day it will happen. I am holding out hope.

Thanks for the thoughtful responses! I have come to a place of total confusion about the science of dieting and obesity. It seems there is much misinformation and even scientists are people and susceptible to interpreting data with a bias towards a belief or desired outcome. I think this is what I mean by "horror" book. Everywhere I turn there's nothing I can trust to be TRUE. So, it comes down to personal bio hacking, lol. I lost 85 lbs eating 600 calories a day but that wasn't sustainable for life and since I stopped doing that, I've gained 65 lbs. back. I won't say that any one way is THE way, but I just keep doing my own experimentation until I find what works or I die.

probably because as a society we are just getting fatter it has opened the door for more counter interpretations of nutrition.. particularly the last few years. I think that Socrates was right the more we know the clearer it becomes that we do not know much. What we can do as dieters is just chart our own course, as you say.

I do CICO and it works very well for me. I eat anything I want to as long as it fits into my RDI, and I'm losing weight. To each his own WOE. Wishing everyone a successful journey. 💛💜💚

What I know is that 90% of the food in the supermarkets is so process, preserved and packaged that it doesn't look like real food to me anymore. My body just makes fat out of that stuff, so I try to stick to real food, as grown by nature and not manufactured in a factory.

so processed ------ correction

Gz9, I agree that cico is true, and outside of a lab it would be difficult to calculate calories out. With CICO, we can control what is within our control. Diet (reduction of calories in) and exercise (increase calories out). It’s horrifying and misleading to me as well some of the stuff Fung says like “the useless the concept of calories.” On calories he writes “often the ‘First Law of Thermodynamics’ is cited which states that energy is neither created or destroyed. This is completely fallacious because if we eat an extra 500 calories, our body may either burn it for body heat or store it as fat. Both situations follow the First Law of Thermodynamics but have drastically different effects on body fatness.” He agrees that CICO is truth. What you do after you eat more than you intend will determine your body composition. Do you want to work out and use the 500 calories or sit and let it turn to fat?

@shirfleur, how long have you been successfully been dieting for? CICO always works in the beginning stages of fat loss. but it will slow down drastically as you near your perfect body fat balance

Protein is more satisfying , keto is a great tool for fast weightloss when there is a calorie deficit, fasting is also another tool. Portion control allows flexibility for the foods in your diet if eliminating whole food groups isn’t your jam. The best diet is one that you enjoy while reaching your goal. 💕💕💕

Mbscn, 4 1/2 months. I'm not going to get into this discussion, let's just agree to disagree. You do what works for you, I'll do what works for me, and may we both succeed in our journey to better health.

Bella, you're too funny. I think I can withstand the onslaught, even if I have to lash myself to the mast. 😁

Oh it does. I think he hits the nail on the head. I can say he’s spot on with his fasting regimen.

And how else would a person figure out their CO without trial and error? It would all depend on what you do for a living and how active you are outside of work. If you're retired it would depend on how active you are.
