The water weight is continuing to fall off, which is good. It's sounds terrible but, I will be glad when the holiday season is over. The pressure to fulfill social expectaions is really stressful. I suppose if I had a normal, loving family, it would be more enjoyable. As it is, I just try not to have too many expectations of my own in order to cope with all the external demands. At least this year I don't have to get time off of work to travel to visit my family since we are all in the same place.

Why do we try to cram broken dysfunctional family units into Norman Rockwell Christmas scenes? I think we need to establish a new baseline for what is "normal" during holidays. For starters, I would ditch the gift giving concept except for children. Children love opening gifts and are easy to please. Am I a grinch? Maybe, lol.

I would also do away with the concept of feasting. In this day and age, it's too easy to go overboard with the treats since our livelihoods are for the most part very sedentary. Plus no one in my family knows how to cook, lol.

Enough of the negativity, I need to dig deep and summon up some more loving kindness. I'll get back to you on that...

Today I am thankful that my husband is taking the day off and getting some rest. I am thankful that I am getting back on track with the diet. I am thankful that my workload is light, I don't think I can handle anymore stress right now.

240.2 lb Lost so far: 74.4 lb.    Still to go: 80.2 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.

I am certainly a grouch. Christmas & a whole other celebrations have just become to commercial! You can't put the radio or Tv on without being told what to buy, do or eat! Even the kids in my circle are usually getting way to many presents to really appreciate them. Bring back the good old times!!

I agree. I actually for a few years boycotted Christmas (partly because I'm not a Christian, so why should I buy presents or decorate or sing carols?). Christmas 2003 - My mother in prison, my sister strung out on meth who knows where, our dog had just died, so Dad & I drank a 36 cans of Budwesier sitting in the farm shop saying "Merry F#$%ing Christmas" & my little brother drove us home. How's that for Rockwell? LOL :)

OMG Jess- I don't remember seeing you there but you just about described 99% of my Christmases!!! Erin you are right on track with what I hear and feel most of the time so you're just fine. I agree..too much of everything! Food, stuff, fake it til you can't take it... madness!

I agree that there are so many expectations at holidays that load on the pressure. I don't think any of us have the little Rockwell family. I have my moms family who tends to be more laid back so we don't do the whole feast like a lot of people do and it is always a potluck style. We each bring something to add to the table so no one is overwhelmed. My dads side is the complete opposite. When you walk in the house during the holidays you can feel the tension and stress trying to make everything perfect. One thing both sides of the family did now that aloof us are older is we only do a gift exchange. No individual gifts and we make a game out of it it really has cut down on a lot of stress and has saved a lot of money

Jess, I know it's not funny, because that Christmas you described sounds like it was a rough one, but it is comforting to know that there are people who have been where I am and understand. Thanks. :)

Wichita, we switched to a gift exchange a few years back as well, but I still don't like it. First of all, since we pick our gift recipient randomly from a hat, you may or may not get the name of someone you are close to and would have some idea of what they would like. Secondly, some people always cheat and get gifts for more people than just their secret santa. I don't think they understand the rules. So then I feel bad when they brought a gift for me and I didn't get one for them. Even though there is a price limit, there is pressure to get something meaningful and desirable and the price limit only makes that harder. Lastly, for the last 2 years I have picked my cousin who without fail, will open up the gift and announce to everyone how much he doesn't like it and why it's stupid.

I agree with the stress. My parents are divorced and the hubby's parents have moved to Ohio ... which means we have 3 sets to divide time between. Talk about trying to appease everyone! Christmas Eve and Christmas Day are packed for us. There's really no time to enjoy it having to rush around everywhere. And we don't even attempt going to Ohio, we usually do Christmas there the weekend after. We've gone to baking cookie as group family gifts. There's still cost, but, it's also not a trinket to collect dust. A week and it's gone!

For years we fought with these same issues. My side of the family (all grown except for grandchildren) give charitable contributions for gifts. We don't need any more "stuff" or food. My husbands family has in the past drawn for children (under 18) gifts so each kid got 2. This year as everyone is strapped they are concentrating on getting together for a meal with games and prizes for children-again we are at the grand-level. It has unstressed everyone. We would usually stay home for Christmas but if we traveled to my parents then the next Christmas we spent with his. NOT every year. Good luck all. Christmas is about the joy of the season and being with family and/or friends-not gifts and travel.
