Kenna Morton's Journal, 22 September 2018

Still cleaning out RANCH stuff from home and my storage locker. I came across a report that my young marathon runner friend, THE GENERAL, wrote for a history report when she was 10 years old. I was tutoring her in anatomy, physiology and history at the time and we had been discussing the whys and wherefore of genetically modified foods.
So she decided to do her report on carrots— one of the first genetically modified foods.

In the 17 century the Dutch were big carrot farmers. Carrots are traditionally and naturally purple white or yellow..

A town in France founded by the Romans in 35 BC was called “Aurenja”. pronunciation eventually became “orange”. In 1544 the rule of Orange was inherited by a man named William— he became William of Orange. Time and events passed— in the 17th century a strain of carrots was developed with a high beta carotene content.—- thus the first orange carrot. All the Dutch farmers started growing orange carrots in honor of their ruler,William of Orange and the traditional carrot colors went by the wayside. Now we are seeing the purple, white and yellow carrots in the store again. I have heard people talking about them being modified, trendy carrots. Other vegetables such as cauliflower are also grown in their traditional colors of green, yellow and orange.

She had so much fun writing this report and giving her presentation in school— complete with a show and tell. You can help kids have fun in school.
