Johanne's Journal, 20 August 2012

It's Monday, and STILL no rain!

They kept predicting it all weekend, but nothing. My tulip poplar has almost no leaves left. I don't know if it will live through the winter.

The funniest thing just happened. I've been looking for my recipe for "Roasted Sicilian Potatoes" and couldn't find it. I couldn't remember where I saw it to look for it. It's really delicious. I had made it once. When I was going through my new emails, the "Web MD" recipe for the day was . . . "Roasted Sicilian Potatoes"; the very one. I was just trying to find it, not 20 minutes ago. How weird is that?!!!

I'm working on the house, as usual. I'm making some headway, but, unless you were familiar with the way it looked a week ago, you wouldn't notice. Sigh. I'm planning to make my Italian, Wild Rice Soup today. It makes 8 servings, which I put up in the freezer. I make almost all of my food in the crockpot that way.

My potted plants are so lush and pretty. I'm trying to decide which ones to bring inside for the winter. Most of them will winter over, but some, like the basil, thyme and oregano, I like to have inside and fresh for cooking. The lemon verbena and rosemary plants have to come in as they won't live outside in the cold. I think I will bring the miniature roses in as well, just for a bit of winter cheeriness. They have been going crazy this summer and have given me much joy.

I'm off to get my soup on. I will catch up with buddies later. Hugs!

I'm grateful for:

Waking up!
An internet full of incredible information.
My Velcro, who has my left hand asleep at the moment.
Drawers full of clean laundry.
The beautiful, cool weather (although I would welcome a lot of rain!)
Not being very hungry, at the moment! LOL!!!
Crazy lace agate. I'm wearing a beautiful piece.
My friends on FS!!!

Cooking is fun, housework not so much. It is one of those necessary evils though, I love a clean house just hate the effort to get it that way. My herbs are all doing well this year. I have to bring them all in as nothing does well in a -30 blizzard. The sage and chives do come back sometimes.

Sorry you have not gotten any rain yet. We finally had some decent rain this past week, and it was a real blessing. Glad to hear some of your plants are doing well....nothing like fresh herbs for cooking, or mixing in salads, etc. How nice that you can do that year round. :)

I sprinkled today so of course we had rain tonight (Chicago). Johanne, I noticed you had Pictsweet Baby broccoli today, don't you love their veggies? DH and I have them at least 3 nights a week. Love the brussels too! I would love to try that roasted Sicilian Potatoes recipe too. I made roasted veggies yesterday without a recipe. The new potatoes were the best but the asparagus turned into string. LOL

FOL, I really, really WANT a clean house. I'm tired of living in chaos. 10 years ago, it would have taken me 2 good days of work to put it right. Now, I have to keep sitting down and I can't GET down. I hate it. I seldom lose herbs in the winter, other than perennials and tender herbs. Those I always bring in. We seldom get colder than -4F here. I don't know if I could handle your winters. LOL!

Cindy, thanks. I hope you had a good one too.

yduj, I'm just afraid of this winter and next summer. The crops for this year are destroyed and the Mississippi river is dried up so that it can't handle the usual barge/commerce traffic. I think many of us are going to be in a world of hurt. I do love my herbs. My neighbor calls them weeds. I think they're beautiful!

Neptune, I've tried watering, washing the car, leaving all of my cushions and chairs out to be soaked . . . nothing works. LOL! Yes, I love Pictsweet brand. It's as good as Birdseye and considerably less expensive. I fill my freezer with them at the first of every month. I'll copy the potato recipe into Tuesday's journal. Hugs!

Joelae, even when there is rain in the forecast, it breaks up before it falls. We have scorched earth out here. Plants and herbs are so good for the air in the house. Yes, they smell great!
