Day 5 of a planned 5 day 'no solid food fast'

Blood sugar 98 mg/dL

I was discussing depression with friends and it occurred to me that I cannot remember when I last had a 'episode of depression'. Now, I can do depression with the best of them. You name it, I have been through it. The deep dark stuff. Over the past years I have gotten wayyy better, but sometime we have those 'periods'.

However, since I started fasting (so that I can achieve ultra low carb on most days), I have not had a single instance. More importantly, while things will irate me from time to time, I don't have the 'anger' and constant 'frustration' I would experience.

Reducing SUGAR in my diet is good for me physically and well as mentally. Thank god for Splenda because it allows me to periodically get that 'sweetness' without the actual 'sugar high and fall' that actual carbs cause.

Anyway, I am also thankful for the gym. Losing weight without gaining muscle makes my body look horrible. I would rather carry an extra 10-20lbs than look frail and sickly. But, the more I lift, the more I am willing to let my weight fall.

Have a great day everyone!

Amazing what a good diet helps. And I think sugar is a big culpret. Good work!

That's awesome about depression. carbs definitely add to depression. I hope they start treating with diet soon.

@Keilin_4 - I can't 'defend' my SPLENDA® usage :) But, without it I would 'break' and have to have a bag of cheetos. Now, I use the granulated stuff that DOES have some carbs in it, but apparently such a small amount it does not send me on a 'carb binge'.

@jenjabba - Yeah, when you only consume 10 net carbs a day for days it WILL change the way you feel... I should have just said that in my Journal and saved 500 words :)

@Fishingwidow - With my 'no solid food fast' all I am really doing is reducing my carbs (sugar). The only extra thing fasting gives me, is that it is the only way I could actually hit 10 net carbs a day.

The point is that it works perfectly for you, tha is what matters, hey I already bought the heavy cream, whipping cream, whipped topping, because you have been taking about your delicious coffe and shake haha . I love that too, I am having 100 calories of it sometimes 🤤🤤

So good to know I'm not alone in the depression demons. Sounds like we're similar in that we've been through the worst of it (hopefully!) and we're functioning human beings most days. I've noticed the same results with IF. My mood and energy has been great, and I've had far fewer down days. Very good!

@SunnieSunny - My brain is wired to 'need' sugar, and my body and brain act badly when I don't have it, and act badly when I get it. At 50 years old I just accept that I am the way I am. But, when I reduce the sugar the symptoms go away. I will gladly take the weight back before I would go back to the 'mental rollercoaster'.

@Keilin_4 - The only negative of my protein drink in Heavy Cream is that it WILL trigger hunger (so I have to keep drinking it ever few hours once I start). If I only drink Green Tea that does not happen. However, this seems to just slow my weight loss from 2lbs a day to 1lbs a day. So days I mentally feel like only having Green Tea I do that, but on days where I want to 'feel full' all day I will hit the protein drink. However, I hold off on the protein drink as long as possible (around 1:000pm) because one I start, I know I will not be able to stop until bed time.

So happy for you M. Those dark moments/days/periods do have a way of creeping up when we're not looking out for them.

I am glad your routine is working for you and I too was suffering from depression for a long while. once I cut the carbs and started exercising which is super important too, that all went away!

Another good substitute for sugar is stevia (truvia) I put in my coffee everyday

@KTaylor31 - I did a lot of experimenting with every sweetener on the planet including 'pure' liquid Splenda. Basically, only the 'granulated' version, that has 'actual carbs' is the one I like (surprise!) :) When I test my blood glucose level I get a small hit that quickly goes away. So, it appears there is 'a little sugar' in it. But, its been still working fine for the past 6 months so I'm good :)
