Diddlee's Journal, 08 August 2019

A 74 year old friend told me about his grandparents. His grandfather had diabetes, and his grandmother used a scale to portion control carbohydrates. The time before Insulin. These days it seem like it is a new discovery about low carb. Not new, just hidden behind a grand business.

When I first started on my journey of watching my food choices better...I tried to get a friend of mine to see the light...he told me..I can’t eat like you do...I love my carbs to much...a few weeks later...he was telling me he had gone to his doctor for blood work..and the doctor had told him that if he didn’t change his lifestyle...and eating habits...diabetes was knocking on his door...

wannabhealthier You're right on. It seem like many need a severe health crisis before they wake up with a mind ready for change. This has become a measure I use with friends now. I do not want to be a preacher, but will put my energy in when they are in dire need. I find this attitude helpful, as my desire to help is strong, but I do not want to waste time with folks not ready for it.

Gold words!

Agree with both of you, most people need to hear it from a Dr, not their “good” friends. What do we know?

Sad that people push the envelope on what they can get away with until one day it’s all over and the damage is done.

it's sad. So many people I know are diabetic, but brainwashed by big food. we all are victims of the carb lies. Now the elite athletes are even getting diabetes possibly from carb loading. I see many athletes here loading heavily on carbs and they still don't think that matters. Now that I think about it, almost all my friends are diabetic. they don't listen to me. maybe after I reach my goal weight. I've already lost one to diabetes and 2 others have diabetes and congestive heart failure. what do they have to lose? keep preaching.

Everyone eats way too many carbs —- the evolution of nutritional knowledge over the years has lead us down today’s current path. I decided a very long time ago that a “healthy diet” was going to be a continuously evolving animal so chose to go moderation in all things. Moderate carbs (150 is the goal), mod protein and fats. Oh yea, physical activity.

Srossca— even after they hear it from their doctors a dozen times, many people just shine it on until the damage is done.

I know a few athletes. Not sure of their 'elite' status. What makes an elite athlete? And do you know of any who are Type 2? Do you know any IRL?

Also, I never knew I was a victim of the carb lies. IDK. What are the carb lies?

This is just one, interesting article on the effects of some carb loading. https://www.outsideonline.com/2201466/are-endurance-athletes-more-susceptible-getting-diabetes

Japan has the highest life expectancy. Rice, noodles, fish, fruit, and vegetables are what their diets revolve around. Micronutrient rich and high fiber diets. High carb, low fat, low calorie plus an active life style= a long healthy life. It isn't the carbs, it's the calorie-dense low satiety foods plus a sedentary lifestyle.

Okay, so no one can describe the carb lies and no one has posted a single elite athlete they know IRL who trains and is Type 2. Good. I was getting concerned. And the article isn't really endorsing the reduction of carbohydrates. I wonder how many people have ever carb loaded during training and understand the why or the how or the cutoff? It does recommend you eat for your goals. Sound familiar?

Terrapin, obviously wanting to pick a fight why don't you go do your own homework. I'm not debating it with anyone. What you want.

I listened to a YouTube interview with Dr. Attia, he is a keto guy. Used to be a long distance swimmer. He was diagnosed with T2D in the height of his competitive career. Now counsels long distance athletes in keto fat fueling.

So one guy get T2D and we all need to change how we eat? We have millions of Italians and Japanese vs. 1 doctor. :D

Erika--can you post a link either in his blog, or an interview, or somewhere to show Attia discussing he is Type 2. I vaguely recall him discussing IR after an extensive long distance run but not Type 2. I also read where he isn't working or focusing his practice with Type 2's but he has worked with some and sights the numbers and progress of a few.

I am 1/2 way through his Rogan interview and he is a intelligent/articulate guy to hear.
