Day 8 of a planned 11 day fast

I'm not surprised I did not lose any weight yesterday. I had huge water weight drops the previous days (I dropped 5 pounds in three days). What I am happy about is that I don't have to spend the next three days losing the weight I gained over the previous two days of feasting :) That is why I set this fast for 11 days. So I could finally get into the 170's.

The reason I am even sharing this journey, knowing fasting scares many people, because it challenges their long held beliefs and they will feel justified in vehemently attacking it, is that I want others like me to know there is HOPE.

Basically, for 8 years on this site I set my goal weight to 200. As a man of 5'8" this is 'obese' (I have to be at least 190 just to be 'overweight'). My average weight was 220 after 7 years of doing the best that I could. I did my best to follow all healthy eating, portion control, low carb, massive exercise, only eating one meal a day, ect.

So 200 pounds was the most I could conceive of and I still couldn't do even that. McDonald's kept calling me every few days and I continually kept 'falling off the wagon'.

Yes the problem is that I keep 'cheating' and gorging every few days. All diets work but *I* am the one not sticking to it. I was 248 15 years ago and I have been trying to lose the weight ever since that time (I only joined Fat Secret 8 years ago in another attempt at a long line of trying things). My point is, after 15 years of 'trying' I know what doesn't work for me. I know what I can and cannot do.

Looking at me and saying I am 'pathetic' and I cannot lose weight until I become another person (until I become like 'them') is like a sentence to death.

For people like me, fasting works. To dissuade a person from a treatment that works is heartless and cruel.

When people say "fasting is bad for you" (there is no scientific proof of this, period) and "you should just eat healthy" (what does that mean? I am insulin resistant and you recommend I eat 150-300 carbs a day!) I know these people don't care about me. They don't care about people like me who suffer from debilitating complications from weight and elevated insulin.

I share my story for those like me that simply cannot lose weight any other way. To give them hope that they can finally set their goal weight to a BMI of "Normal".

I finally had the courage to do that myself just this morning.

I honestly think everyone has to find what works for them and listen to their own bodies. I always find your posts very inspiring! I'm not ready to do a fast quite yet, but your posts make me think I could someday!

I admire your fasting. I had a friend in college who would fast every other day. I sometimes consider it. I know doing all you’ve been doing with little results is almost like failing... that feeling. I just don’t know what is the difference between fasting and anorexic restriction? It’s a different mindset? All I know is, my doctor forbid me to fast, said brain tissue would be slow to recover 😵

Good for you!! It's so wonderful to find what works for us as an individual. I am very intrigued by fasting but haven't yet given it much of a try yet. Don't worry about what anyone else has to say about it! ❤

I hope you are standing tall and feeling proud. You are doing what is best for you, listening to what works for your body and soul...and that is what matters. Remember, when people point a finger a you to criticize, there a three pointing back at them--they are really feeling small themselves and trying to compensate by attacking you. You are awesome!

You're doing what you need to do, period! when I documented a fast on here, I got the haters too. I just smiled and said thanks and ignored their comments. You're doing great, keep at it!

I admire that you are doing something that I can't imagine myself doing. Not everyone will walk the same path, when I started out this year something just clicked, I know I can maintain any be happy with my eating style for the rest of my life. I is truly amazing when you find what works for you, looking forward to seeing you get into the "normal" category.

Ppl can be so ignorant and I know that is discouraging! Luckily you know better and it’s so wonderful that you have found what works for you! Keep up the good work!

@KayBuckaroo - As a person who is addicted to carbs there is no chance I will be anorexic, I simply eat too much :) Also, I see my body exactly the way it truly is. Also, I don't want to be skinny, I want to be muscular. I just have to get my weight down so you can actually see what muscles I have :)

As you said, you must do what works for you. I have cookbooks that go back 20 or so years, and it is so funny to read what the pundits said as gospel... My, how things have changed. Go for it!!

How are you doing on the 11 day fast? Is it a water fast? Or other aids? I am on a journey to stop the madness in my life. To have control of my eating has been very important, even though I was very committed to different plans, I would get so discouraged at stalling out.... for months sometimes. And it takes a lot of support to get through those defeating days.... but tweak here and there...through keto I became fat adapted, and found I didn’t get hungry for a long time. .... to having to eat all the time or snacking makes things easier. Feeling great does too. I am just starting to dabble in longer fasts, as my body heals,or needs healing. Best plan I have ever used. IF or eating less often! People are scared of fasting so they don’t know what it can do for healing. Good for you for getting to day eight! How did you prepare for eleven days of fasting.

@patsypureheart - You can see what I am eating on my fast at this link: https://bit.ly/2wV6Lgr (you can see I take in more than 'just water') - - As far as preparing for it, I simply did longer and longer fasts. I may not get a chance to do another 11 day fast for a month or more because I have to find a weekend where we have nothing planned. Then my BMI may drop below 20 and then an 11 day fast is not healthy (never imagined I would ever have that problem!) - - If a person can do Keto I recommend it. Eating everyday is a nice thing :) Fasting is for people who enjoy it, need it for medical reasons, or cannot lose weight any other way.
