Day 129- So after a day of upping water, mowing half the lawn and a good run/walk I am back with-in 1/2 lb of where I was before the weekend. My guess is it was water retention. I did not eat much over the weekend, but drank more beer than planned. The person I was with drank, when they normally don’t or if they do, they only have a few. So I think that led me to drink more….. but still much less than I did a year ago. I would start drinking when I got into to town and stop when I left, LOL (No, I did not use to drink for breakfast, I had the: it had to be past noon rule….LOL)

So it looks like this week may not be waste and I may still lose a little. Not being here for the weekend means that I did not get to do my regular shopping. So I have to run out for a few things as needed. It is also a good chance to clean the house out again. I really don’t want to spend the money, I spent enough over the weekend.

So I have been reading up on running and see there is a lot to learn. I wish I would have read up before buying a new pair of sneakers over the weekend. I got Saucony Kinvara 2, did my research and got them on sale from a little hometown store in West Hartford, wanted the 3’s but saved a ton buying the old model. I think I may have gotten a size to big and maybe not the proper shoe for my foot. They felt better yesterday during my training than what I had been using. I really need to go to a running store and get fitted. I also want to go to my podiatrist and see what he can do for me now that I want to run. I wear orthodics and the ones I have are over 10yrs old. Last time I went to see him (5-6 yrs ago) he told me I don’t need new ones for a long time, the plastic they use now does not wear out like the old ones. I just want to get checked out. (I tried to go few weeks ago, but his office was fighting with my insurance company and supposed to get it resolved.)

So one of my questions is, how many pairs of running shoes do you have? How often do you replace them? Any pointers would be great, as everything I read, nobody agrees.

I've had one pair for about a year now - which most experts will tell you is far too long. I'm actually trying to keep them past when I should to try to transition to a more "barefoot running" style. I hear getting a new pair about every 6 months is a decent rule of thumb, and that you potentially want your shoes to be about half worn in for your races (or as I learned this weekend, maybe even have different workout shoes than racing shoes). The cynical side of me has a hard time not believing that a lot of all this is a marketing ploy. But the girl in me really really wants a bright pink new pair of Brooks :D

Well, I run in Nike flip-flops (and go through a pair a year)!

I am afraid I can't give you advice on the running shoes ... I bought mine in the middle of last year - but based my decision on the pair that had Nike + and we're comfy.

Thanks for the buddy request! I have 3 pairs of shoes - my very old ones that I only use for muddy runs, a pair that are 6 months old that I use for pretty much all of my outdoor running and a 3rd pair that are only a month old that I use for indoor training and treadmill. When I feel like my 6 month old shoes are getting too worn (probably around the 1 year mark based on how much I run), I will transition my indoor shoes to outdoor shoes and purchase a new pair of indoor shoes. So I pretty much always have a pair that are pretty broke in, but not used up.
