Cleta's Journal, 13 March 2017

Like I said before, I don't know why I try. This has been going on for 5 years. Same diet. Same amount eaten. Measured each portion. Even made portions smaller over the years. No changes.

That can be so discouraging but don't give up. Albert Einstein stated, “The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, but expecting different results”. I think we all get a little crazy with our diet/weight obsession at times. Keep in mind that your body changes through the years and the diet that once worked might not now. We all have to work within our bodily restrictions but try writing everything that you consume down or recording it here. After a while, you might see some habitual patterns that could be slowing you down and you can start making some changes that will make a difference for you. Good look in the fight Cleta and be well.

It is a whole lot better than gaining! Maybe you should try Atkins.

I was told by a very good trainer from NY in order to lose weight go with a diet of 10 calories per pound of current weight making sure to avoid all white carbs such as bread, rice, cereal, potatoes, pasta and fried food with breading (so if you weigh 200 lbs consume no more than 2000 calories per day). Make sure to throw in some moderate exercise and it should do wonders. No cheating, stick with it - I've been doing it for 35 days now and have lost 7 lbs. I understand everyone is different, but hey, what do we have to lose?

Flhrci -- If I ate that much, I'd be gaining weight. It depends on your metabolism. I weigh about 200 and I need to eat less than 1300 kcal to lose. At 1500, I'm maintaining. So, maybe that rule works for a young athlete, but not for this 62 year old female. Just say'n.

erikahollister - you are probably absolutely correct, but I think it has a lot to do with the amount of exercise you are getting vs calories. I'm 44, but still quite active so it worked for me. I just know this app tells me to eat way more for weight loss than what the trainer said. This app tells me I should be eating 2800 calories per day vs the 1500 I've been doing. If I ate 2800 per day I would have probably gained 7 lbs vs losing the 7 lbs.

The most important part of that diet was the avoidance of all white carbs. Eat as much protein and fat as yo want - stay away from the processed and white carbs.

I whole-heartedly agree. No grains, no sugar, no root vegetables, no fruit. These all have too many carbs for weight loss. I do eat a few blackberries. I've lost 82 lbs on this regime.

I have tried Atkins. Lost 10 pounds within 2 weeks, then without changing a thing put 12 pounds back on. Only difference, I had to take antibiotics for a week. Continued on Atkins and never lost another pound. I am diabetic and must stay away from all grains, processed foods, and white foods, or my blood sugar goes up sky high. The diet I am on now is a modified Atkins. I must keep my carbs below 50 grams per day for my blood sugar. My diet contains more protein and fat than carbs. I am also eating only when my glucose is below 110. Sometimes that is only once per day. My doctor is in on this with me and I see her regularly. I am unable to walk more than out to my car and back. Going to my mailbox is really quite painful. I have neuropathy in my feet and legs. I have limited use of my arms as well so most exercises are out. I do what I can when I can. My husband has a paper route and I go with him and take several papers from the car to the house. By the time we finish my legs are aching. I cannot take pain medication for the neuropathy or I gain weight. I have even changed my diabetes medication to herbs because of the weight gains from insulin or even pills. (with my doctor's okay) Thank you for your help and the love you all are showing. I will never give up as I believe if I could lose from 50-75 pounds I can lower my readings and feel a lot better.

I know this is a long shot if you see an endocrinologist, but have you had your thyroid checked? My niece kept gaining weight even though she was cutting cals and it turns out she had Hashimotos and a gluten allergy. There is gluten everywhere and it caused her to hold onto weight...

AZSouthsideGirl--I do have 3 spots on my thyroid that my doctor is having scanned every 6 months. The spots are not active so we are just keeping an eye on them. I just saw a series of videos about thyroid diseases and will be talking to her about that. Will have more than just the TSH. My latest tsh was 1.47...
