Losin25's Journal, 03 January 2012

I had an epiphany today. Today I hit a huge milestone - I'm now 164 pounds. That is the lowest my weight has been in 17 years. I was thinking about why did I get fat and why I didn't get fat when I was younger. I was a skinny, healthy kid.

I started to gain weight when I first had my son Zeke and moved into my mother-in-laws house while my husband was deployed overseas. My MIL was always buying snacks. There were always cookies or Little Debbies in her pantry. I didn't grow up like that. We never had snacks other than crackers. My mom hated sweets and didn't keep them in the house. If we were hungry, we'd make a sandwich, eat some cheese, or a can of soup. Those were my snacks growing up. My husband has struggled with his weight since he was a little boy. And I asked him if his mom always had the snack cabinet -- they did! Always!

And to this day, my husband expects for there to be snacks in the house. Since I've got diagnosed with celiac disease 2 years ago (and also developed allergies to dairy and eggs), there's very little that I can eat that is considered snack foods so I don't eat snacks anymore. If I get hungry when it isn't meal time, I eat a chicken drumstick or a peice of fruit.

Snack foods are the devil. I tell people that getting celiac disease is a blessing and a curse. But the more I think about it, the more I'm realizing that it is a blessing.

Congratulations on the epiphany! Sometimes these will significantly change the way we think. Well done. :)
