Are we Americans eating ourselves poor?

It seems ludicrous to me that I spend so much time thinking about losing weight, looking for nifty gadgets, memberships, groups to help me towards this goal when in reality if I just thought about what I was spending my money on, I'd naturally lose weight.

Here is a good fiscal diet:

1. Buy only enough food for the week and spend below a maximum budget. Based on my calculations below I will have to spend at least $36.02 and no more than $183 for my husband and I per week.

-Protein: 2-3 servings per day at 2-3 oz per serving. For 2 people in one week that's between 3.5-7.9lbs of meat. Lean meats like chicken breast, pork loin, beans and tofu can be had between $1-$5 a lb meaning on proteins between $3.50-$39.50 should be spent in my house.

-Vegetables and Fruit: 5-9 servings of fruits and vegetables are recommended which can usually be had at around $1 per 2-3 servings (usually a lb of apples or a bunch of spinach/greens) at the local farmer's market. $23-$63 per week.

-Whole Grains: 6-11 servings of oatmeal, brown rice, whole wheat bread can usually be had for about $0.07-$0.25 per serving. That's about $5.88-$38.50 a week.

-Dairy: 2-3 servings of dairy can be had for about $0.13 to $1.00 a serving totaling $3.64 to $42 for our family of 2.

2. Plan meals. Pop open your circulars to find out what you can buy fresh for cheap. There's usually a couple of door buster deals related to under $1.00/lb meat or 10lbs for $10.00 vegetables. Build meals around this and create shopping lists from only what you need to build these meals.

3. Skip the prepackaged snacks, sodas and juices. They are empty calories and you don't need them to sustain life!
