lineruds's Journal, 26 June 2023

Today was the first time I was hungry in the morning in a week. Perhaps because I ate 1,000 kcals yesterday, but that included cake because my family didn't want to finish it. Before I tossed it away, I remembered my parents telling me, "We don't waste food!" I took a couple of bites, then threw the rest in the trash, then took the kitchen bag out to the dumpster, too! I can't let inanimate object like food overpower me.

I was raised the same way. Throwing food away was the ultimate sin. Before starting back on my diet, my friend and I would go to buffets often. She wasted more than she ate. I never said anything, but I wanted to bend her over my knee...lol.

That is an awesome step! I still struggle with it! I noticed the same thing this morning, I let my carb count creep up a bit and woke up hungry also. I did my fasted stretches and walk and it seemed to curb it a bit. I've been piddling around paying bills and what-not and have not eaten yet, I better get to it before I run out of time again today. All this eating, whew!

Baby steps. 😉 Thank you for sharing your experiences, ladies. Addiction can take a lifetime to overcome, but I think the outcome is worth the journey.

I have swapped out or added smaller size baking, cake and pie pans so that I can cook/make DESSERTS in a size that better suits my target audience. I do not eat leftover treats just because I don’t want to waste them. They go in the garbage.

So true, lineruds! ...and habits. I have a neighbor that is a little less fortunate than me, so some leftovers go to him. The others are given to my animals before I throw them away. Everything here is utilized in one way or another, even coffee grinds are used in compost.

I should add, that I keep left overs for the next day's meal also. They only go to the animals after everyone is tired of them 😂

Good idea Kenna and Venus. It was my son's birthday cake and only half the guests we invited could make it, so we had a lot left over since no one wanted to take any home, and of course I thought my husband and son would want more. It sat in the fridge intouched for weeks, now it's gone. 👐

It was hard to learn to cook with the number of guests in mind and keeping portion control in mind. I was used to cooking for lots of folks, my sister and friends included. Not doing as much of that right now. Some things lend themselves to being even better the next day and that’s good. Others, not so much.

Kenna, I have a hubby that is not a fan of leftovers, of any type. I invested in smaller pots and pans and it has helped me learn to cook for just two and not have a refrigerator loaded with leftovers. Most of our dogs are special needs rescues and they are not allowed to have people food. We ate our hogs, the hogs ate the chickens so I have no omnivores left to give the scraps to. That makes it even more difficult to do guilt free disposal. On the rare occasions I have substantial left-overs, like when I make chili and gumbo freezing in single meal size portions does the trick!

I have found that awareness of hunger is a powerful tool for weight loss. It isn't easy. Things like scheduled eating, recreational eating, emotional eating, boredom, etc. can masquerade as hunger. As for dietary choices, eating leftovers before they spoil is not always the best one. Food waste is a problem but one's own health is more important.

I agree, bdawsn. My husband doesn't like leftovers either, unless it's lasagna. I freeze leftovers into serving size containers so we can grab and go for lunch, though I haven't been eating them lately because I have no way to reheat in my car. 🤪 But also reheat on a night we don't have time to cook. Something I don't tell my husband is when I use leftover ingredients in other dishes. Sometimes I'll freeze meat I've cooked, like baked chicken breasts, then use it in another dish like chicken alfredo, and he doesn't know the difference because it came from the freezer, not the fridge. I also turn leftover steak into stroganoff, left over pork roast into fried rice, etc....
