Today I went on a walk before a weekly online event at 1 pm. I went through a park about 20 minutes from my house that I don't go to that often. From afar, I saw some figures dressed in the kind of outfit I would wear when going to West African dance classes over the past 28 years. I then realized I could hear the drumming and as I got closer, I realized I knew some of the people in the class, especially a class organizer whose events I had gone to for years. It turned out the teacher was one that I had been thinking about getting in touch with to find out when she might offer a class. I decided to join in but planned to leave in time to get to my event online at home even though it would mean missing the last part of the class. Then I found out she teaches only once every few months. I figured it was kismet that I had stumbled on the class and needed to stay. Boy, were my legs throbbing when I left! I got really sweaty for the first time in a long time. I sometimes get a little sweaty when I walk but can usually pace myself so that it doesn't get heavy. It felt good to push a little more. And I still had an okay time arriving late at the online event. I also feel grateful that at age 67 I can still take advantage of pushing my body sometimes.
One of the women who arrived after me is also a dance teacher and the mother of one of the drummers. She let everyone know that I came to her classes even before she had children! (She also commented that I looked good and I was glad I used Covid to get even smarter about my eating.) I remembered on the way home that I had actually gone to her wedding. I sometimes get sad that so many people I know I only interact with at events around the interest that brings us together. I don't have people I know really well to go to the movies with or eat out often with or many other generic social interactions. But today I felt fine about it. I was grateful I ran into everybody and that we had such a beautiful art in common to share in the fresh air after the last 18 months.
