I was in a situation this weekend where I was with people (older family) who watch television a lot of the day for various reasons. I haven't had a TV for a few years. I find plenty of ways to waste time on the computer/phone and am exposed to ridiculous advertising, but TV is crazy. I could not believe how there was ad after ad after ad for fast food and convenience food. They had a huge TV and thus the burgers, fries, and fried chicken were huge, too. It looks like nearly all the food these family members eat comes from restaurants or packages. I admit, about third of the food I ate even while I was losing weight was prepared by someone else besides me. But I am observing other effects that I am willing to at least experiment with my diet to decrease. It's their prerogative not to but boy does it make it hard. Especially when they have health problems associated with their food choices and overeating. Others often get defensive and I admit I get the same way, though I rarely bring up anything specific unless asked. It doesn't help that we have very different passions in life as well. And it really doesn't help that their passions are much more sanctioned by mainstream culture than mine are. I just haven't been able to pull those things off. Even if I were involved, those things create division as well. Finding common ground can feel like such work. We did bond over some SNL skits and Dame Edna! Well, I'm home now and have to stop having offensive/defensive conversations in my mind of with people who aren't even here!

There is a small mountain in a community just east of San Diego (where I live) that has a trail and a service road, with a shorter connecting trail, to the top. The main trail has gotten so crowded that even at midday on a Wednesday, I thought there were too many people to take that route. I have not been up the mountain in well over a year. I took the back service road route and boy was it steep! and it had some downs and ups, too, so that by the time I was done, my counter said I had climbed 75 floors which is at least ten more than when I used to use the main trail. And boy, do my feet feel it! Let's see how they are tomorrow.

If my calculations are right, I had near a 500-calorie deficit even eating more food than I normally do.

Because I am working with blood glucose, I am tracking. I used to eat so much whole grain and legume starch. Now I have a starch at only one meal a day and after a meal where I had my normal amount and had my BG go up by about 50 points- a big rise- I keep the portion smaller., and replace mostly with animal food because the starches are a more condensed calorie and need to be replaced with something substantial UNLESS you have been eating way more starch than I was, in which case, veggies are a good replacement. It's pretty hard to eat 200 calories, which was my usual starch portion of a meal, of vegetables and I already include them.

So tonight I experimented with plantain, a little bit smaller portion than usual, but a little more than I had been serving myself of grains. The meal was at least 40% protein, as is recommended by the program I am trying. I missed taking the reading at about an hour, so I'm not sure how high it got, but it's now at 105, which I think is a good sign. So I can keep plantains in the starch rotation. Boy, do I miss them! The texture especially. The keto world has come up with all sorts of supposed replacements, like egg wraps for tortillas or cauliflower rice, or zoodles- from zucchini-, but I think if you have people truth serum and if the starch versions such as real pasta didn't have the effect they have on the people in the program, they would be not be scarfing down these things. I don't want to get too dependent on such foods because I plan at some point to be traveling, likely in the Third World again, and Italy for the first time, and am I going to be able to find zoodles in Italy? Not that I can eat the pasta now the way I might have been able to when I was younger. But I'll still go!

Interesting. Had one corn tortilla left in the freezer and ate it at breakfast, but made sure to have about 40% protein. And the total amount of food wasn't not a lot. BG was acceptable after an hour which is supposed to be about the right time for non diabetics to get a good reading. The other time I got a high reading from corn it was a combo of mush and whole corn. I'll have to try again as I still have some of each left. Maybe a smaller amount? If it's not satisfying, I'll just not buy anymore when I run out.

Got in some steps but opted to finish sooner as I will be going to an outdoor concert late afternoon where there will be free form on-the-grass dancing happening. And there is a beach not far from there in case I don't get enough movement in . Our weather continues to be terrific to my senses.
