It's 3:47. It's -30 outside (thankfully outside). The wood stove needed tending. Now I'm up. Grr.

The question in my mind is this: Is it better to awaken at 3:47 to keep the place warm, or is it better to sleep in until 7 and awaken to severe cold? That is always a tough one for me when stay at the cabin in the winter.

It's a good question. Better to get up. It takes have the day to bring the place back up to temp when it's this cold outside. Worst was -42 one time and decided to go out for a quick (I mean quick) hike. Put on my two balaklavas, one a thin neoprene, the second a quilted deal, and headed out. So cold the tears were spontaneously coming to my eyes. Eyelashes began to freeze together. I decided to call it off. :)

That should be half the day of course.

I was up at 3:30. Must be something in the air. Hope you're staying warm.

I awaken to a freezing 65 degrees usually. I can't imagine what -30 would be like but hopefully your house is well insulated.

I had to make a trip down south this week. We heat exclusively with wood at the moment. Getting our firewood is something we do together for fun. Yes, you read that right. Anyway, I'm down south and my wife phones and says "It was 12 degrees (about 50 US degrees) in the house this morning. How come it's warmer when you're home?" Dang it!!! Missed a perfect opportunity. I said, "I get up at 3 AM to put more wood one." She told me I could come back home when I wanted to. :)
