Kenna Morton's Journal, 28 April 2020

As anticipated, our food supply chain is starting to break down. On the list of items that will be on that high impact list is meat; red meat and pork to be more specific. Now would be a appropriate time for many low carb people to do some reading and research on the financial and health benefits of legumes of all types. You need a protein source and like it or not, legumes are a wonderful source. Just say’in.

Diablo— it is called protein poisoning where people eat far more protein than the recommended amount— to a toxic amount that the kidneys can’t handle.. We don’t see it often in people with normal diets but you do see it in the world of high protein eaters who are not also eating sufficient fat. You will also see it in people who are in survival situations and eat a lot of rabbit because that’s all they have— they survive their lost ordeal but end up dying from excessive protein intake. . I first heard of it many years ago when I took a cruel I gotta wilderness survival course.

That’s suppose to say grueling wilderness survival course. Darn auto correct.

Liv001– yes rabbit, like so many other meats tastes like chicken but a little gamier.wild rabbits are or can be tough and dryer depending on how you cook it but commercially raised rabbit for consumption is pretty much like chicken in terms of texture.

Seems that what you're decribing is VERY rare considering I've never heard of it and I have been in the bodybuilding world for 20 years. Most bodybuilders are on a low fat high protein diet as well. I think that 4 oz of meat providing 7 grams of fat is pretty sufficient..

I think keto dieters are safe since a high protein diet would kick them out of ketosis anyway and they go out of their way to get a lot of fat. I guess if the diet was nothing but rabbit, that could be the case but again, that wouldn't be keto or high carb.

I mean, 1500 calories of rabbit will net you 63 grams of fat which is plenty for anyone. Not sure how this condition happens. Maybe on sub 300 calories a day?

Yeah, there isn't a food out there that is good to eat alone. Rabbit will still sustain life much longer than any vegetable.

I would like to see the science on "lethal levels of protein consumption." And personally, I think it would be difficult to eat enough to get to this presumed level as it is so filling (if eating naturally-occurring animal protein sources).

So I looked it up, and Harvard Health says protein poisoning is extremely rare but no one knows exactly how much protein can cause it. They do suggest a 140-lb person should not exceed 125 grams/day. That roughly 1.25 lbs of meat.

Trackin64–don’t obsess over protein poisoning. This is a condition that is mostly seen in extreme survival situations. I have only seen it in the ER setting with a body builder who didn’t know what the hell he was doing. If you are eating a well balanced diet that includes the important macros in recommended amounts, drinking water, etc, this will never be a problem for you.

I am 110 and I averages 124 grams of protein every day this month. Obviously from different sources

@liv001: They weren't saying that 125 gr for a 140 lb person was lethal, it was their guesstimate of what one might not want to exceed. So I wouldn't worry if I was you. It seems that a lot of nutritional science is based on calcs that are developed without actually studying people and hormonal effects of food AND a certain assumption we all react the same to calories based on height.

@Jenna Morton - I wasn't obsessing over protein poisoning, just curious if it even was a real thing. I rather think the typical protein guidelines are too low and the carbohydrates too high - at least they are for me, unless I want to continue on the path of weight gain and further on to diabetes and high blood pressure.

Well, if your calories are in point the macro percentages matter not at all where weight/fat gain are concerned. More protein is always good though.
