BadAndee's Journal, 30 July 2008

I'm back to shake things up around here! have you all been sticking to that diet!!? (I mean NEW WAY OF LIFE?)

Good Lordy, it's WONDERFUL to be back home! I missed my yard, and my birds, and my trees, and my bed, and my warm, bright, and sunny kitchen, and my empty fridge where there is NO food in there that I shouldn't be consuming...!!!! I could keep going on and on! Should I?? Heee heee heee!!

Did I gain weight? yeah, ya betcha! (Minnesotan talk!) but only because I couldn't hurt hubby's mom's feelings by not eating her food! She is the reigning queen of junk food! Every kind of sweet pastry in the world was found on her kitchen counter, in groups of 3! THAT was what we all looked forward to for BREAKFAST everyday! I skipped all that stuff, and went without nourishment, so by lunch (or "dinner" in Minnesotan talk), my defenses were down a little, and the guards failed to prevent me from being tempted by other types of readily available junk food! I ate things like crackers, too many nuts, a little bit of candy and bread, too many Atkins bars... Dinner time (or SUPPER in Minnesotan talk) was fried this-and-that, OR critters from the animal kingdom, such as deer meat, (weird! WHO in their right mind wants to chomp on Bambi's relatives??), buffalo (bizarre! WHO in their right mind would even think to eat a buffalo??) But, I especially loved the way they wanted us to be with-one over the consuming of these critters! WE went to hubby's friend's house where they raise buffalo, so we could see how they looked when they romped and played before they landed on our plates! and then we went fishing every day to catch all the ugly fish of the world, so that we could meet-and-greet before consumption, I guess! AND since it's not deer season, we got the pleasure of looking at all the pictures from when they were first shot up and killed, and THEN there were pictures of their being cut up for steaks and ribs and filets!!!!!! They were so proud of their pictures too! Hubby's mom prepares some of the best potato salad, pasta salads, crab salads, spinach salads and cut up fruit WITH EVERY MEAL...I only touched the fruit, though!! Small victory for MEEEE!!!
It probably didn't have much to do with food that I gained weight! It had to do more with the lack of exercise, if I had to guess! Sitting in a boat and fishing (ALL THAT WATER IN ONE STATE IS JUST UNFAIR!)out in the middle of a lake that was big enough to be an ocean, is not really a 'sport'! Soooo, considering my choices, DAMAGE TOLL could have been worse!

I missed you all so much! To show how grateful I am for you, I will shield you from my newly acquired backwoods vocabulary!! I'm going to spend the rest of this week purging words OUT of my vocabulary, such as; ya'll! supper! pop! don'tcha know! Is that right! LOL

I may laugh at their 'ways' and 'talk' but while I was there, I WAS THE OUTSIDER! about 100 people a day asked me what kind of accent I had and where was I from! LOL

wha???

HEYYY!!!! There she is!!! Back and funnier than ever! Did the Minnesotans kick you out of their land for being so forward?!!! I won't be surprised! But, I wholeheartedly concur with your observations---the vegetarian in me cringed at the thought of meeting-and-greeting your supper before killing/injesting it! It's a whole different culture indeed! And those accents! Hilarious to read your description just as I am writing a paper on..accents!!! (You know that's what I do research on, right?)...So, keep these observations coming...it's fun to read! :) Meanwhile, we missed you!!!! Mary and I bitched about you! About how you left us here all alone to fight the good fight, all alone and defenseless, while you were off galivanting! ;) Welcome home :) Hugs!!!

Actually, buffalo is quite good for you. Much healthier thand ground beef..that's what I eat, if I am in the mood for a burger. A little info from the national Bison association: http://www.bisoncentral.com/bison-cooking-health.php?c=67&d=99&a=1056&w=2&r=Y

ROFL! Accent! As for the meat, I have to appreciate the shock because I experienced that when I first moved to rural Oregon from big-city California. The first time I saw my neighbor hanging a skinned dead deer in his carport, to bleed it (my view from the kitchen window) I lost my appetite for the week. I still don't go for "sport" hunting or fishing, but when gathered with respect I will eat something that was humanely raised (or hunted wild) and humanely killed. That is why I only buy meat and eggs from sources I know. I still can't get into the whole hunting thing, but if my husband wanted to take up fishing, I wouldn't mind. It is definitely a different culture. Welcome back!

I eat buffalo too because it is raised without antibiotics and hormones.

"humanely killed"? Not to beat a dead horse(pun!), but isn't that an oxymoron? ;) LoL!

Isn't it weird being told YOU have an accent? I remember on my honeymoon in England, my husband's relatives thought we had such adorable accents. I was shocked! Hehehe. I don't blame you for giving in to the goodies. You were outnumbered! The "meet and greet" did sound a little strange, though. Good to have you back. I'm looking forward to the language lessons :)

I don't think killing our food animals in a humane manner is an oxymoron. If you chose to eat animals they can still be respected. American Indians ate what they killed, but respeced the animal just the same. Some of our slaughterhouses don't.

Yes, Sararay, I do know what you mean and agree with you that if one were to eat meat (and thereby kill animals to do so), then at least try to be as humane about it as possible. I was being facetious in my above comment and taking an extreme vegetarian position that killing of any form is inhumane--no matter how gently or humanely you do it. But as I said, that's just the vegetarian-bias--no need to go strictly by that.

I inadvertantly gave PETA my address! I think its b/c I signed up for some cutsie comics for my kid! Those comics would give any adult nightmares!!!!! Unbelievable! If what the PETA people say is true..like letting a chicken starve for weeks so it lays more eggs..then yeah...that is pretty cruel. God gives us rule over animals..to eat as we wish...but I wonder if He cares how we kill them. I wonder how animals were sacrificed in the OT? Was that cruelly done? Just mumbling...

Nice to see "the welcome mat" was rolled out for you in MN!!!! I have NEVER eaten Deer or Buffalo or ANY wild game - just the basics chicken, turkey, beef, pork or fish! YAY! BadAndee is back! We need you around here to kick our butts! Deer meat = YUK. I don't like it at all. My Dad was a deer hunter and Mom used to cook it and not tell us what it was. But when I tasted it, I knew...no matter how she cooked it! I've never tried buffalo. Does it taste like chicken? LOL. Welcome back!! :) (((hugs)))

Oooooh yah don'tcha know. hehehe Anyone who is anyone in my family is from Minnesota, and I'm fully aware of the Minnesotan accent! My brother and I were born in Flordia...and apparently we had just enough of a southern accent, that when we visited family in Minnesota, they would actually put us on the phone with their friends to hear "OUR" accent! Puhlease! hahahah Glad your back, and that your trip was fun! =)
