FullaBella's Journal, 17 August 2019

Driving to Dallas today I was thinking about the reward system I’ve used in the past with my weight loss. ‘When I lose ‘X’ pounds I’m going to ‘Do This Thing’.

I haven’t done it this time around. I think it’s because having failed (five? six?) times already I don’t feel deserving of rewards. Otherwise, how does it balance out? It’s not as if I could ever return all those ‘new clothes’ for a full refund or give back the ‘Spa Days’. Vegas didn’t repossess those celebration weekends. Short of sending Vinnie the Nose to break my kneecaps, how could they?

I considered the ‘health is its own reward’ argument but there are plenty healthy weight people who suffer with illnesses. So if poor health is a punishment what was their crime? No, that can’t be it.

Shouldn’t a reward system have an equally respected method of punishment? Maybe because I’ve never utilized one explains why I have repeated this so many times.

This brought to mind Stephen King's short story ‘Quitter’s, Inc.’ wherein an institute gives a 100% guarantee that they will help people quit smoking and not gain weight. (spoiler alert) They had spies everywhere, so there was no sneaking. If they caught you they kidnapped & tortured members of your family. If you gained weight they cut off (the family member’s) fingers.

Although I wouldn't mind seeing some people in my family tortured I’m hoping I don’t have to resort to anything this extreme.

I'm not sure if I'm following what you're saying exactly, but my general feeling is we deserve to be kind to ourselves, fat or thin. We don't deserve punishment, gain or lose. If you wouldn't say it or do it to a beloved child (not one of the screaming, obnoxious ones), then don't do it or say it to yourself. Maybe this isn't addressing what you meant by your post, but it was what your post brought to mind for me

Change your habits, whatever they are, something keeps tripping you up.

Yeah, (re)gaining weight is punishment enough.

@Writing - I agree. I think I'm still circling the topic in my head and getting closer to an answer @Phil - maybe I need a boat too? @ Mira - could be ... the punishment is having to lose it again & again?

Dallas? Did you say Dallas? And the word reward? All that came to my mind is Dicky's BBQ......sighs

For me, right now, the "reward" I hope is increased mobility and good lab results for CRP. I have very weak thigh muscles. If I am on the floor (cleaning or try to get a dog or cat toy out from under the couch) I can't get up without holding onto something. And hoping success will mean that I will not have heart problems (something both parents suffered from and all my siblings do), high blood pressure, high cholesterol and diabetes - so far have managed to avoid. Want to keep it that way. I just have to keep that in my mind every time the grocery store deliberately (I'm pretty sure they do it on purpose) puts dozens of bags of my favorite potato chips on display in front of the store! Focus on my health. Remember my mom died after having a massive stroke at the age of 61. Remember my dad had a triple by pass in his 60's (but still lived to 91)

I'd like to try the Dicky's in Dallas, there was a franchise location in Lufkin that was, meh. Barbecue is definitely a reward, smoked ribs are one of the few foods I still want to gorge on.

@Fritzy - I really feel as you continue your journey you will be rewarded with physical improvement. @Phil - BBQ is a staple, not a reward. 😁
