Kenna Morton's Journal, 23 April 2019

I have a history of mentoring many obese people on their road to a healthier lifestyle. About 3 weeks ago I met a 51 year old man who asked if I would try to help him. Long discussions took place and I agreed. His motivation was to shed 100 lb. he has many siblings and other close relatives that are type 2 diabetics with heart disease etc. His brother was recently put on dialysis for diabetes related end stage kidney failure and he finally got scared. He was proud that he himself had no medical problems that he knew about, but then he hadn’t seen a doctor in 20 years.. I did get him to make an appointment for a physical before we started— scheduled for the first week in May. We have been talking about his likes, dislikes, whether he was a binge eater or just overate. Fortunately just an overeater. Anyway, just covering the ground I normally do.

My phone rang this morning at 6 am— it was this guy’s wife. He had a massive heart attack on Easter Sunday at the big family BBQ and died. I’m so very sad for this family. I hope this helps the surviving members to come to grip with their situation and make a decision that they want to stay alive and move toward a way to achieve that goal. Rest In Peace Caleb.

You can hope. I was stunned when my Mother in Law was on her way to losing a foot due to complications the doctor felt related to diabetes and smoking. My sister in law, during a discussion (away from the MIL) commented, while taking a huge inhale on her cigarette 'I'll stop before it gets that bad.' That's the thing. It's hard to know when it's 'that bad' as it varies per person but most of us refuse to acknowledge our mortality.

So sad, Kenna. Bless you for trying to help him. Too bad he sought help too late.

Oh my heart. The story was reading so nice. And then...so sad. We need to do what we can early. This family must be heartbroken. I’ll be praying for them. ❤️
