Sugar is evil. I know that sounds extreme to some who deeply believe moderation in everything is possible in health and diet, or those who follow the "a calorie is a calorie is a calorie" mantra. But I have come to believe that there are certain foods that cannot be eaten in moderation by the majority of the population, or that they are so destructive to our health, that moderation in consuming them goes hand in hand with moderation in smoking.

Extreme view perhaps, but the real world for me. If you don't believe me, but are still curious, watch the YouTube video by Dr. Lustig, Sugar: The Bitter Truth. It is over an hour long. I watched that video, and immediately, that very day, cut out all high fructose corn syrup from my diet. A few weeks later, all other sweeteners, other than stevia and xylitol, in very, very infrequent and small amounts, were banished. Don't want them or need them. I saw immediate changes in my health. My cholesterol levels suddenly started getting better, after slowly creeping in the wrong direction for a number of years. My mood swings were gone. And this wasn't just me making this observation...this came from my husband and was reinforced by my daughter. My energy level was better, and best of all, my cravings were gone. It took about a month, and after that the beast, the monkey, the demon force was beat into submission. That never happened with moderation. With moderation it was always, every day, peeking over my shoulder, waiting for that moment of weakness or rationalizing. Now, on the rare occasion when I get a craving I know it is not for the food itself; it is for a feeling associated with the food. A memory. An escape. But I have no interest in going there. Being sugar free is liberating not only in the pounds it releases, but also in the freedom from the attention it constantly took. My attention can now be focused on so many other things.
I am watching others fight back this demon, or begin to confront it. I for one never thought I could do this as completely or as effectively as I have. But it is the single most valuable thing I have done to improve my health in the last year. No question. And I never want to be back in that place of the sugar having the upper hand. So, I will stay ever vigilant. Extreme to some. But I think my health is worth some extreme actions.

Totally agree. For me, however, I didn't have the fortitude to win the no sugar/high GI carb battle longterm until I upped the saturated fat. The establishment's criminal low fat/food pyramid policy caused me a lifetime of physical and emotional harm. I see you have added MCT oil. Any thoughts?

You know, I think it is helping the ketosis thing. I find I have a bit more energy, and a bit more mental clarity. Both my husband and I are sold on this bulletproof coffee in the morning now. He has lost 5 pounds in the last few weeks, without even trying...he only needs to lose a few. But he also says he has a better level and quality of energy in his day. Can't beat that!

I totally agree with you. I am going to watch the video. I have also been thinking about reading the book "wheat belly" that someone else on here recommended. I have found with me that as long as I cut those things out of my diet I can lose and as soon as I try to reintoduce them I gain it back. I lost 50 pounds and then began working as a part time job at Starbucks and had to "sample" everything they had in order to be able to "sell" it to customers. I gained it all back...just from sampling! I also struggle with hypothyroidism and I don't know if that is what the sugar is effecting or what, I only know I need to completely cut it out. On another note, what is the MCT oil and how does that help ketosis??

MCT oil is mid-chain triglyceride oil. It comes from coconut oil, and the triglycerides that are 8 to 10 carbon chain length are in this type of oil. They are most easily absorbed, and they kick start ketosis. If you go to bulletproofexec.com you can read about bulletproof coffee. That is how I start my mornings now, and it is like doing intermittent fasting, but better. It helps your body extend the ketosis from the overnight fast, but also gives you the fuel of the fats. The coffee and the MCT oil are said to help boost your fat burning. All I know is that I feel great when I have it in the morning. You can use coconut oil, or just the butter instead...but it doesn't have quite the same oomph as with the MCT oil.
