As I sat at the table this morning eating my breakfast of a delicious omelet, with nice fresh ingredients, and some strawberries, I had a deep appreciation for what a beautiful meal I was enjoying, and how eating this was a life giving act for myself. I have learned over the years about discerning which activities or relationships in my life are life giving, and which are life draining. With this awareness has come an attempt to get more of the life giving people and activities, and less of the life draining.
But it never really clicked as deeply for me as it did today, that eating right, and taking care of this body that I inhabit, is life giving in the fullest sense of the word. I give myself not just more physical life, breathing in and out, lol, but also more life in terms of simple enjoyment. Those strawberries were delicious. And they are truly only this good for a short period of time each year. The omelet had fresh basil, and some mini heirloom tomatoes I cut up, and some jarlsberg cheese that melts up really nicely. The eggs came from our local CSA, another act of self-care. Together, it was a little moment of pleasure in my day, wonderful tastes and textures. It was not just eating for the sake of eating, checking off how many calories I had, and how many carbs, or vegetables, or whatever. It can be, at least some of the time, a chance to be present to the true pleasures that real food offers us.
The challenges of making the lifestyle changes to sustain a weight loss over a lifetime are formidable. I lost 60+ lbs. in my twenties, and kept it off for nine years. It is doable. But holding on to it when life throws a curve ball, which it will, is tough. But I think the only way I stand a chance, is to be more present to these simple little moments. Truly enjoy the meal before me, and see it as a gift to myself. This is not about denial. This is about sustenance. I hope you can find a few life giving moments in your day, and relish them. :)
