shirfleur 1's Journal, 26 February 2022

I was watching a documentary series, Down to Earth with Zac Efron, in which he and superfoods expert Darin Olien travel around the world in search of especially healthy foods, water and ways of eating. One place they visited was Sardinia, Italy, one of the five longevity Blue Zones. And what they found was that these people eat a high carb (think pasta), low protein diet. And they are among the healthiest people in the world. I will not lower my protein intake to their levels, but I will continue to eat my carbs guilt-free. The series was interesting and informative; I especially enjoyed the segment on water.

Carbs really have been demonized, much like fat was. Plenty of healthy eating patterns rely on carbs

Love carbs! How was your trip, Shir?

I love carbs too. My trip was great, we spent most of the time out at the lake; Scott and I got up early Sunday morning and drove out there to watch the sunrise, one of my favorite things to do, and he indulges me.

Carbs are all about portion control and quality.

I enjoy documentaries like that. Your trip sounds like you had a wonderful time. I have been greeting the sunrise the last couple weeks and it's amazing. 💕

Interesting. Do they eat alot of fish ? little on the nose being named Sardinia lol.. I was eating canned sardines last summer , experimenting with my diet . High in protein, low calorie and you get those great omegas from the fish oil

I’ve been trying to increase my carb intake too. I think I’ve developed an irrational belief/fear that they make you gain weight. Keto has been forced down our throats for such a long time now! Realistically, everything should be a healthy balance. I’ve been eating a lot of brown rice and Ezekiel bread. I’m going to give making sourdough bread another try too ❤️

I have lowered my protein and increased my carbs considerably. I haven't gained a pound in weeks.

Low protein is important because that keeps growth factors at bay (cancer thrives on them), but It is also essential to move during the day (all errands done on foot, for example). If you want to know more about diet and longevity, I recommend The Longevity Diet, by the top-level scientist Valter Longo, btw he is Italian.

Siete, the idea of doing errands on foot sounds great unless you live in a city like Houston that covers 665 square miles and has summer temperatures approaching 100° with 95% humidity.

You are right, Shirfleur! It is impossible to transpose what people in other parts of the world do to a completely different location. I just wanted to point out that Sardnians’ longevity is not only due to their diet.

Dan Buettner, the founder of the Blue Zones, discovered five places where people live the longest and are the healthiest. They are: Sardinia, Italy; Okinawa, Japan; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Ikaria, Greece and Loma Linda, California. He wrote a book, The Blue Zones and lists 9 things that contribute to the these people's longevity, which he calls The Power 9.

Moderation in everything, right? 💗🌸🌺

Dougettasue: You are correct that while adjusting nutrients, we need to watch the overall ratio of calories in and calories spent. Case in point: I recently decided to up my fiber. It turns out that fiber is high in grains. Great, except now my carbs are going up. So I have to monitor other carb sources and adjust accordingly. It's a learning experience!

BTincher -- I've been upping my fiber, too, and have found that blackberries and raspberries are amazing on that front. Avocados and flaxseed are great as well. And would you believe cocoa powder, of all things, has some? 🤔
