I was always in pretty good shape, then I had 2 babies and turned 40 within a span of 3 years. Not good for the waistline. Trying to shed the last bit of baby chub using exercise (p90x) and a balanced 1700 calorie a day diet. Getting there, slowly but surely.

Hey, Heather - If you're exercising regularly (and you should be if you want to lose weight and get in shape), an 1800 calorie a day diet is fine. You need fuel for your workouts and your life, and restricting calories too much will cause you to "bonk" or run out of energy, or cause your metabolism to slow down. As for a breakdown of what you should be eating, a 40-30-30 (protein/carb/fat) is a solid ratio that will keep your blood sugar in check. For more aggressive weight loss, you could limit fat even more to 40-40-20.
