Stopped the gym a year ago and started running more frequently. Now running 4 to 5 times a week. Typically, distances of 6km (4 miles) to 17km (10 miles). Not caring too much about calories (used to follow with precision). I don't eat much sugar (I'm lucky that I never suffer cravings for sweet things or chocolate), most of the sugar I consume is hidden in food. I would say that I have started to eat more normally rather than caring about calories, but I think the running actually suppresses appetite (I would be interested if others have had the same experience).
If you hate running (I was never sold on the idea), start small, walking a certain distance, getting faster at completing that distance, then run and walk a little until you can complete that distance without stopping to walk (never stand still, catch your breath whilst walking).
I recently completed a 10km race in 45:36. Three years ago I couldn't do it under 60 minutes. Six years ago I couldn't run 5km without stopping. Getting fit doesn't happen overnight (forget the fad diets, if you want to eat and drink alcohol, you are gonna have to work for it). I now enjoy running and the running community, I find it hard to believe I'm saying that! I've always hated running throughout my adult life!!!
