Lent: the Spirit's willingness can help the Fleshes' weekness
With Lent beginning today for most of the Western Church (and next week for our Eastern brethren) it is a good time to look at traditional spiritual practices and see the benefits we can reap from them physically as well.
Fasting (either old school bread-fortified bread, not just generic stuff- and water, or a simple "two small meals, one regular sized, with no snacking in between) and abstaining from meat, are both excellent ways to help kick your diet in the pants. Even if you are not Christian (or even Spiritual for that matter), the discipline of self denial strengthens many areas of our lives. As someone who has battled addictive behaviors on many levels, the act of saying "no" to myself has made it easier to cope with a variety of difficulties as they present themselves.
In a late start on bread and water fasting (on Wednesdays and Fridays)last Lent, I still was able to drop twelve pounds in four seeks. The fasting also helped me to focus on getting in to work out three of the remaining days of the week. For me at least, the action of denying my natural desire to rest at the end of the day and work out instead became a spiritual offering as well as something that was physically good for me. I also found it easier to resist goodies and unhealthy snacks, offering it up as a small sacrifice.
Body, mind, and spirit are all interconnected; health in one can lead to health in the others if we allow it to do so.
