At long last I am tired of being pregnant (I am a guy!) and having type-2 diabetes. So in January 2011 I went to the library to read up on diabetes and see if there was anything I could do. Especially, since I had not been managing it very well. I found a book, The 30-Day Diabetes Miracle, and was impressed by what it said and the approach to dealing with diabetes in general.
It spoke of a completely plant-based diet and how within a week the blood sugar readings start to come back under control. The more I read, the more it made sense. I also stumbled upon a documentary on PBS, Eating, that talked about how a plant-based diet also helps reduce and eliminate cancer as well as other diseases.
So I decided to try an experiment during February 2011 and follow the recommended guidelines for the month and see what happened. During January 2011 I weighed, at one point, 323. I had not been less than 300 pounds since sometime in 2000 or 2001.
At the end of the experiment I weighed 293. I had past my first goal of 300 pounds and was well on my way to my 2nd, 285. I decided that there would be no way that I would go back to my previous eating lifestyle.
Today, March 13, 2011, I weighed in at 285.5. The first day that my weight showed a 285 for one of my 3 weight samples (I average the 3 each time). My next goal is 270 and it should take about 3-4 weeks.
Following the plan, I get the protein that I need and am full most of the time, so I do not snack. I have fruit, vegetables and nuts as snacks any more. In fact, my wife started to notice almost immediately that I did not snack and was amazed. As was I!
I am stopping one of the diabetes drugs that I have been taking, as my blood sugar readings are now tending to be too low!
I would highly-recommend the 30-Day and Rave, plant-based diets to anyone. Although I would not call it a diet as it has been a major life-style change for me. I plan on staying with it for the rest of my life.
