When I was 146.8 lbs I thought I was doing well. I was thin, sure. But I was falling asleep, slurring my speech, foggy-headed, and freezing all the time. I went to the doctor and learned that I was hypothyroid. I reviewed my eating and saw that I was losing weight by eating LOADS of leafy greens (kale, collards, Swiss chard, spinach) that I was growing in my garden, eating raw sometimes, in smoothies, you name it. And my frozen veggies were mostly broccoli and cauliflower. All of these greens are "goitrogenous" vegetables that actually reduce your thyroids ability to produce hormones. Pair that with the exertion (for me, at least), of running 3 miles every other day and BAM--a thyroid disorder. And for me, a thyroid disorder means a pregnancy disorder, in that a thyroid out of balance makes me less likely to be able to get pregnant. In fact, I miscarried a pregnancy, likely due to my thyroid's inability to provide my developing fetus the hormones it needed to develop. What. the. hell.
And removing carbs was also a bad idea, because it meant I was missing vital B vitamins and folate.
So, what my grandmother said was right: Too much of a good thing CAN be bad.
I've had to rethink EVERYTHING. I eat completely differently. I've gained weight but feel SO much better.
I'm trying to reboot and get down to a more sensible 155 lbs. I think under 150 just isn't healthy for me. But, One Day at a Time.
Things I'm doing differently: no goitrogenous veggies. I'm eating complex carbs, and substituting yoga, walking, and rowing for running. We'll see how it goes.

Still training for my 5K this Saturday. Ran 3 miles yesterday. Just heard that the 5K may get rained out....bleh. Staying optimistic. Amazed that I've lost 36 pounds in 7 months and am training for a 5K. Feel incredible. This time last year I was depressed that I had not followed through on training for the 5K, I was overweight and out of control.

I am so ecstatic!! Under 150! That was my dreamy and lofty goal back on July 9, 2011, and I can't believe I'm here!! When I started this new life my conservative goal was to get to 165lbs and simply not register as overweight when I calculated my BMI. But secretly and honestly, my true goal was to weigh 150lbs or less and wear a size 6 again. I have done BOTH! That, and I'm a runner for the first time in my life. My first 5K is coming up in a few weeks.
In retrospect, what worked for me: weighing my food so that I learned what a real portion should be and look like, no snacking between meals, eating loads and loads of green leafy veggies (raw and cooked), and wearing a pedometer every day and getting 10,000 steps daily.
I never thought I'd be here again. I had tried everything. I have a lifestyle that is easy to manage and control and that works for me.I'd like to see 145lbs maybe, by my 1 year anniversary of starting this new life.
