losing 0.1 lb a week
10 February 2011
So, it's been a while since I've been on FatSecret. Since then, I have:
- seen Food Inc.
- seen Food Matters
- started taking vitamins every day
- stopped going to fast food joints
- stopped eating the fried food in my dorm's cafe
- started working out (very infrequently, this bullet is still a work in progress)
Right after I stopped logging in to Fat Secret, I was going to Steak and Shake pretty much every night (double steakburger, French fries, and a large cookie dough shake--same thing every night), eating big meals three or four times a day, and taking no vitamins what so ever.
About a week and a half ago, though, I watched the documentary Food Inc. on Netflix. It really showed me just how awful our food production system is, especially in regards to meat. I want nothing to do with it anymore. I've begun researching vegan recipes that I think I'll like and am starting to gather what ingredients I'll need the next time I go grocery shopping. A note on the vegan part: I'm not going to stop eating meat. I haven't actually gone vegan. The issue is that I don't want to consume meat that has been mass produced by all those tyrannic companies. When I live somewhere with a farmer's market, I'll gladly buy and cook meat. For now, I'm going to try to steer clear of the whole nasty trade.
Until I know what recipes I want to try and what I'll need to get for them, I've purchased some fruits that I already know I like and a lot of Kashi products (cereals, bars, etc.).
I really feel like I've already had major improvements in the foods I want to eat, how much food I want to eat, and when I want to eat.
I eat about twice everyday, comfortably. I'll have a larger breakfast and then a smaller dinner in the evening. I drink a lot of water, usually with a teaspoon or two of Benefiber in it so that I don't get hungry so often).
Food Matters, another documentary, was a real slap in my vitamin deficient face. It showed me how essential getting your daily vitamins is. I never miss taking them now, right after breakfast usually.
Even with just about a week's time of all these changes, I'm feeling really good.

Day 5 --
That calzone at lunch sent my calories for the day over the edge. I don't think it was exactly like a Sbarro one, because that's what I entered in the Food Diary. It was more like a big hunk of bread. I like bread, though, so that's fine with me.
Classes started for me today. Pretty stressful.
I'm drinking a lot of water. Since the throat is still healing, I take a drink of water after every swallow of food and I drink a bottle in between (more or less depending) meals. Still haven't had any soda.
Overall, not the best of health days, but oh well.

Day 4 --
Since I'm still a little ill and I had no reason to be on campus near the gym today, I broke out the Wii just to play around instead of sitting on my butt watching T.V.
I ended up doing the free step mode on Wii Fit for 30 minutes. I took 3454 steps up and down on a 3-inch platform that the balance board sits on. Since I'm doing the 100 miles walked challenge, I thought I would look up how many steps are in a mile so I could add my Wii time to that challenge. Turns out that a mile is about 2000 steps, give or take because everyone's steps are different. I was a few hundred short of the two mile goal for today, but I think it's alright, because I shouldn't be exerting myself fully for another week and a half or so. I was really sweating, though, and my face got pretty red, so... good job for today.
Ate a pretty big breakfast--eggs and pancakes. I also had pizza last night, but it had a lot of exposed sauce on it and I think it might have seared the back of my throat. I tried to eat a solid lunch, but one bite in and I was through.
Overall, in terms of healthiness, I think it's been a pretty nice day.
Oh, and: I haven't been drinking soda. I usually get it in the cafe of my dorm when I go down for meals, but I've been getting milk and water instead. So, that's another challenge that I entered that I'm sticking to.
