Hi

I found this site in October 2013 but didn't follow my diet very successfully and as a consequence didn't loose any weight.
Hey Ho! Keep trying.

As a retired person I now have more time to be active so have joined a gym and do a workout 3 times each week. When I don't go to the gym I do a 30 min brisk walk in the local park so that helps a bit.
Looking at the breakdown of activity to calorie loss I am surprised to see how productive just standing is in terms of weight loss. My New Year resolution is to stand when painting (which is a hobby) and hopefully this will add another workout to the day!
I enjoy gardening and growing my own vegetables and try to eat less meat these days or at least buy organic when I can.
I am type 2 diabetic and also have an under active thyroid problem so struggle to keep my weight down but there has to be a way to do it so here goes...again.

Protein alternatives to hummus?
You could make your own hummus from a small can of chick peas, some garlic, lemon juice and plain yoghurt. Just give it a zizz and season to taste.
Also much cheaper than bought.

What's on your playlist that gets you going?
What do you hit on your ipod/phone to motivate you on a winter's day? I'm in my prime (er of a certain age) so need a bit of motivational music to persuade me to move fast enough to make a difference. I like:

Start Me Up - Rolling Stones
Dancing in the Dark - Bruce Springsteen
Poker Face - Lady Gaga
I love to Boogie - T Rex
Bad Case of Loving You - Robert Palmer

and for weight work in the gym:

It's Got to be Perfect - Fairground Attraction

How about you?

Diabetes
Hi Browneyes
I too have been advised by my dietician to stay away from bad carbs and eat between 35 - 45 grams of good carbs with every meal. At the moment I am doing just that and am very careful with weighing my food as my guesses are not very accurate.
It seems to be working.
Good luck!

Thanks for the suggestions I will take your advice though I do try not to scare myself to death! I suppose I have been more concerned over the last couple of years about getting my thyroid problems sorted and now that the medication is working have turned attention to the diabetes for which I take Metformin. I know how serious diabetes is which is why I am going to loose weight. I lost 4 stones a number of years ago by starving myself on a very low calorie diet. Of course, it all went back on again because it was unsustainable. I'm hoping that when the weight goes, over time, I will be able to eat a normal, healthy (but frugal) diet. But we all need a little help don't we? Thanks again X

Thanks for your interest and comments.
I eat a lot of veg and very few processed foods. Don't buy take aways or ready meals. The meatballs I had today were home made and I make my own salad dressing with fromage frais, mustard and 1/2 teasp honey. I had to find the closest item on the prepared list to calculate calories. BUT in the past I have been over generous with potatoes and home made chips. Bananas are a favourite but have stopped buying them. I eat some sort of fruit every day and my readings are usually about 8 or 9 so not too bad but rising recently which is why I have joined this site.
