My One Year Anniversary On This Journey

What a journey the past year has been! My life has been complicated and I have been thrown alot of curves any one of which could have derailed me in and of itself. I have risen above it all and continued to focus on my vital needs, never losing site of what my end goal is. Keep in mind, at this point a had already quit drinking and smoking, that occurred on 10/10/09. Guess I over compensated with food because 10 months later I was 30 lbs heavier! Here we go............

8/29/2010 - My journey began, had no clue what I was doing but needed to start somewhere
11/1/2010 - My 80 yr old dad fell and fractured his hip-had hip replacement
3/1/2011 - The company I work for has been sold
4/17/2011 - My brother passed away suddenly from a massive heart attack
4/23/2011 - My husband is hospitalized in ICU for 3 weeks
5/14/2011 - My mom turned 80, I am sole caregiver for two elderly parents
8/4/2011 - My husband is hospitalized once again, another 2 weeks in ICU
9/2/2011 - I have left behind 32 lbs!

Life isn't about how you survive the storm, it is all about how you dance in the rain!

My best to you all! ~healthybabs

Happy Monday

Effects of Irene are minimal for us except street is still flooded and trees are still down in the street, at least we do have power while over half of our town does not. I hear chain saws going outside so clean up has begun. Hope all my friends up in Vermont are safe and sound, massive flooding up there which was so unexpected.

Checked out my gardens this morning and after howling winds last night probably around 60-70 mph it seems all my wonderful basil plants are snapped off. So this morning I already have made a half gallon of homemade basil pesto, a quart of garlic basil oil, and have a ton of lovely leaves drying to use throughout the winter. I had brought in some of my smaller plants indoors so still have enough fresh to pick. I'm going to try to maintain those throughout the winter, but I never seem to have luck doing that for some reason.

Not working today as everyone seems to either be without power or just unable to get there so DH and I are headed down to the park (if we can get there and the river didn't flood it out) to take our huge power walk. Will then spend the afternoon cleaning up the yard of all the debris. Will also plan out meals for this week to use up all the food we stocked up with that didn't get eaten.

Beautiful sunny breezy day today, I guess it's the calm AFTER the storm. Have a great week everyone.

We Survived Irene - 8/28/2011

Bye-Bye Irene....sun has come out, rain has stopped (we had about 8-10 inches in our area), wind is still blowing. Took a quick walk down the driveway and see the pond across the street has flooded across the road and there is a huge tree down across the road a little farther up. No damage at our place so all is good here.

Unfortunately, over half of the state is without power, there is alot of flooding all across the state due to all the small rivers, tributaries and streams so that is not a good story. Folks are out trying to maneuver the water in canoes, kayaks and tubes which is really not a good idea, many people are missing as a result and feared drowned. Wish people would realize it is best to stay in and let things get cleaned up before venturing out!

Enjoyed our anniversary dinner of a yummy turkey breast that I prepared in the crockpot, fresh sweet corn, braised chard and a little bit of scalloped potato...oh yes, a red velvet cupcake for dessert. Must admit it was hard to keep mind on track today regarding food, just wanted all comfy stuff as nerves were a bit shattered.

Shall start anew tomorrow!

27 August 2011

Just waiting for Irene. All the prep we could do has been done. Just waiting now. We are not in an evacuation zone so we are staying put. Checked on my parents as they are about an hour north, they are all set. Has been raining since about 2pm and starting to gain in intensity now. Height of the storm later on tonight thru about 6 pm tomorrow...gonna be a long one. Will see how these sustained winds around 80 mph affect the trees around the house. We know we will not be able to leave out house for a few days. Power outages expected for 3 or maybe more days. DH and I just figured we can't drive out on any street because we have a stream or pond along every exit possibility which are all sure to flood. That is OK, we have plenty of food and water to see us thru. Fingers crossed!!

Hey, just realized our 18th wedding anniversary is tomorrow! Doesn't Irene know that three is a crowd!!!!
