Performance: losing 1.3 lb a week

Goal Weight

I was always told I was a fat kid, and maybe I was. In high school I lost weight, but always thought, and was told, I was fat. I look back at pictures and think "What I wouldn't give to look like that again!". I've tried Weight Watchers, but still the weight came off so slow it was discouraging and I figured if I'm going to work this hard and not lose weight I may as well eat whatever! I've fluctuated up and down but I'm still under what I was when I put a stressful life behind me and began living. I want to do more with my life and my kids and it's difficult to do when you're this size. My kids are also overweight, and they are struggling with self image and many other issues. I worry about what they will become if they continue on this path. The professionals are telling me to teach them how to eat right, what and how much. And I think...Oh Yeah...I'm such a great example! I realize how can you teach your kids to do the right thing when you're not doing it? This is not an instance where "do what I say not what I do" necessarily works. I'm trying to take a different approach this time...so we'll see what happens!

Exercise & Eating
I think you should see how you feel. If you can't exercise until after the kids go to bed, and you haven't eaten since lunch, you're not going to have the fuel in your body and the energy to work out. But exercising right after you eat probably won't feel good either. I always get hungry after exercising, so I would eat before and after! Just keep it light.

obsessed with food.
Overeating is an addiction, so when you tell yourself you're "dieting", I think your brain goes into detox mode and you start to crave the things you're "missing". If you think about it as a life change, and what eating the crap does to you, then it may be easier. I've dieted SEVERAL times and this always happens for about 2 weeks. Once you get passed 2 weeks it usually subsides, but never goes away. I've also done some research - when you eat sugar, and even sugar substitute, your body craves it more. So definitely check your diet and try to cut that stuff out to a minimum. There's also no reason why you can't have great tasting food. The trick is making it healthier. My friend is awesome at this and there are several groups on FS to help you with that. If you really do obsess about it constantly, where it takes over your whole day, every day, you may have another underlying problem you're trying to deal with and seaking professional help may assist you with that.

Calories??
Your recommended RDI is for MAINTAINING. You lose 1 pound for every 3500 calories deficit (calories burned over calories taken in). So if you increase decrease your calories by 500 / day, you should lose about 1 pound per week. Decrease by 1000 / day, you should lose 2 pounds per week. This isn't exact, because it depends on your activity and just life in general (water weight, time of the month, etc). But it's a goal to shoot for. If you make it too low...your body goes into starvation mode and your metabolism will slow down, so don't get carried away! Wink My RDI was about the same as yours. I started at 1800 calories and pulled it down to around 1500 - that scale just wasn't moving fast enough!

**And congrats on your 1 pound - hey....it's a start! Smile

tendonitis and exercise
Welcome to FS! I see your dilema! Sad What about trying a stationary bike? We have 6 kids in our household so I know time is never yours! A gym is probably out of the question, but maybe you have room somewhere? You can look in your local recycler/pennysaver or Craigslist for people getting rid of them if money is an issue. Or last resort maybe talk to your doctor. Hope that helps!

What are your goals?
Greg I'm on the same path as you. I'm not setting a time limit for a certain weight, I just want to stick to eating healthy and lose the weight. Some people need that direct target though. I figure I've set that target so many times, maybe it's just time to enjoy the journey. I've set goals at the 50 lb marks - 250, 200, etc. That way I can celebrate the small successes. Other things I'd like to do...not need my inhaler any more, smaller clothes, and my ultimate goal is to water ski again. I used to every summer when I was a kid, and as I got older I got too heavy and week to be pulled up out of the water. It would be nice to enjoy that again.
