Progress
A little surprised as wt went up, but I have taken up swimming 3x a wk @ 3/4 of a mile, so I believe that I'm building muscle also. Be patient. I have been staying in the 1500-2000 calorie range, I probably need to push more 1700-1800. According to this site my swimming burns up 800 cals, so I will tighten up on cals. I have also been fasting till 10 am (my lunch time).
Blood pressure yesterday was 116/64, blood sugar was 127 in morning. This morning it was 158. I took 1/2 of b.p. med this morning, and will continue to see what happens with b.p. Again my goal is to completely beat type 2 diabetes! All my numbers indicate I'm on the right path.

Keto eating
Is anyone else doing a Ketogenic lifestyle way of eating? Have done it before for awhile and did well, but slipped back into carbs again. I started again last week and lost 7 lbs. The level of satisfaction is through the roof! The research that I have done shows this is the best way to BEAT type 2 diabetes... that's goal. Nothing about this comes close to the typical American diet. You'll notice I didn't say Keto diet, 'diet' always suggest "I'm just doing this till I loose weight", or what ever. I believe all of us need to view what we are doing is in fact a lifestyle change.

I will keep you posted

Success!
One thing I have 'discovered' here of late is the magic of... wait for it... OBEDIENCE! To what I know to be true. There is no such thing as 'well I have had a good week, so I can have a little (fill in the blank)'. NO, no you can't. I'm more rabid about this because with wanting to loose weight, I am more concerned about beating diabetes! I am glucose intolerant therefore I am giving my body, my cells a chance to get back that sensitivity by the way I eat. I am off my meds and my morning numbers are falling day by day.

Hi, this is Barry. Started MyFatSecret November 9, 2010 and am very happy to have found the site. As of 11-13-10 I am 59 yrs, 6’4” tall, 278#, a ‘recovering’ type 2 diabetic (off all meds).
Singularly the thing that is working for me is (1), realizing that it was a chosen lifestyle that got me to 326#, and it is a lifestyle I am choosing, daily, that has and will continue to yield success in my life; in other words, I am not on a diet! And (2), exercise is not an option.
My diet, if you will, is simply this; NO WHITE FOOD; white flour, white pasta, white rice, sugar, and NO refined or processed foods, No manmade vegetable oils (canola, sunflower, Wesson, Crisco, etc.).
I do eat some pasta made from Quinoa, not as a dish, but I add it to my homemade soups, as I do beans, to spread out the *carbs. It is high in protein and fiber. Occasionally I eat a little brown, organic rice.
What I do eat is plenty of vegys (here in California the prices are about the same as non-organic); grains and beans, which I eat in limited quantities, because of the carbs; I enjoy plenty of good chicken, turkey, beef and fish; I eat whole milk cheeses (no reduced fat or 2%).
I am currently using the following ratios on a 1,000-1,500 calorie regime. I AM NOT A CALORIE COUNTER, without the cravings and the fact that I am satisfied (now there’s a word you don’t hear from a dieter), it just works out that way.

15% (75gr.) Carbs (complex)
45% (225gr.) Protein
40% (88gr.) Fat (Good fats like olive oil, grapeseed oil, and coconut oil
for cooking ( and yes it is a saturated fat, more later)
I don’t follow this to the letter, but rather as a guide line.

I swim a mile 3 times a week, burning up 1,000 calories in the process, and workout with weights for building strength.

In closing let me warn you, that if you are trying, in any way, to hang on to your old habits, justifications (that’s a biggie), favorite foods, chips, desserts, etc……. you will fail, period. I am telling you, if you let your body (not your mind) dictate what it needs, you will absolutely be surprised how do-able this is.
An old baseball player once said, “you can’t steal second with your foot on first”. Your old lifestyle got you here; you don’t need a diet, you, I, we need to change our mindset. That’s not easy to do alone… enter ‘MyFatSecret’; a great way to encourage one another.

*Carbohydrates are the challenge to a diabetic; but the average American way of eating, well, that’s why there are so many diabetics. We do need carbs for fuel, so I make sure the one’s I eat are from whole foods, NOTHING processed.
I try to stay between 50-75 gr. right now as I am loosing weight; maybe I can bump that up to 100 gr. later.

If you are wanting to dialog… I am here
Barry
