Staying on the wagon on a night out...
The big thing for me when I was still drinking was that I would overdo the alcohol. I don't have to tell you that alcohol will impair your judgment as well as lower your inhibition. If I was at a buffet after drinking a lot I can tell you the dessert bar would look a heckuva lot more appealing than the salad bar. Whatever willpower I might have had when I walked in the place is quickly forgotten.

SO my advice would be to only have one or two alcoholic drinks (remember that alcohol has calories as well), drink plenty of water, and scout out the buffet early on. There's usually always something you can have to eat without going to far overboard on your diet.

Bar Codes
I'm not sure we have to do anything. I think that you could just use your smart phone to scan the UPC code of the food item and if there is a match in the database it will pull it up. I've noticed that some generic or store brand items (cottage cheese, celery, ground beef, etc) will scan but there isn't a specific brand entry in the database for it.

The Allowable Calories On This Site Seem High
I noticed that too when I first joined. I think that the site takes into account your basal metabolism (the amount of calories you burn per day just existing) AND factors in your calories burned through exercise which is above and beyond that.

It can't be a "perfect" measure because it can't know your particular idiosyncrasies. If you were actually burning 3484 and eating 3484 calories per day then your weight should remain constant at: whatever it is. If you are gaining fat on your current diet: your calorie intake is higher than your calories burned (generally speaking).

I would recommend you make use of the calorie counting function of the site. You can make historical entries too. Think back to what was a typical day's menu back before you decided to diet. I'd wager that that number of calories is the baseline from which you should cut back because at that point your weight was either still increasing or staying the same at a weight you were unhappy with.

Goal Weight decision ?
I set my goal weight at 200lbs. I am 6'5". Once I got my weight down to 190lbs and my friends and family all said, "ACK! You look like a cancer survivor or something so don't lose any more weight!". So I think 200lbs is just about ideal for me.

Where does my motivation go?
There is one silly thing I like to do in order to motivate myself to stick to my diet and exercise. I search online for pictures of men in their bathing suits. Then I select two images. One of a fit man who looks to be about the same build I want to be. And one of a chunky man who clearly has no business being anywhere near a pair of shorts.

Who they are doesn't matter but I put the chunky guy's picture up on the fridge. This way every time I see him standing there I'm reminded to make healthy food choices.

I put fit guy's picture in the corner of the full-length mirror outside the bathroom. This way I'm reminded of my goal every time I stand in the mirror. The goal of all this is not to give myself an unrealistic ideal body image of course. Its more like, I'm trying to remind myself that in between chunky guy and fit guy are choices I have to make. Choices between what feels good and what IS good.
