I'm finally dropping weight after 1 year of having my baby! I had a lot of stressful stuff happen around October due to my mom passing away at the young age of 56. Had to pay for her funeral and arrange everything with my brother because she had nothing planned. I tend to loose weight from stress. Sorry this post ended up being long and ranty.

My mom had a lot of health issues stemming from type 2 diabetes. She took insulin but never managed her diet, she loves carbs. So do I but I try to be sensible, especially if you have a disease. While cleaning out her room, I found a blood sugar log that confirmed my suspicions that she was still eating lots of fast food. Her waking blood sugar was in the 300 range! Found a lot of receipts showing she grabbed McDonalds & Taco Bell a lot. You can get low carb meals there but she didn't. Also she was addicted to salt, she even put it on pizza! Actually she joked about that...while laying in the hospital bed after having her stint put in for blockage of an artery to her heart! It was so serious that the dr was thinking of doing open heart again.

She was diagnosed at 21, after she had me. So that's a lot of abuse to put on oneself! She had open heart in 2004 in her 40s. Last year she was diagnosed with peripheral artery disease. Her feet & toes were black! Luckily she didn't loose them after intervention. In August 2015 she had another stint put in. The surgeon said she needs to cut back on salt. I had to laugh about that because he was preaching to the choir.

She ended up passing away from myocardial infarction, a heart attack. When I was cleaning her room, I discovered she was sleeping upright in her chair. Her bed was covered with clothes, etc! Also found an empty salt container which made me upset but also at peace. I tried helping her in the past but she wouldn't give up salty, carb loaded foods. I used to blame myself but I know I couldn't change her. Just like how I realized no one is going to make me get in shape. I have to want it.

My mom was comfortable at being 5 ft and 240+ pounds, and eating whatever junk she wanted.

I guess I'm sharing this is because I don't want to go down the same path. When I was around 6 months pregnant I was diagnosed with gestational diabetes. Diabetes does run in my mom's side of the family, however it's a combination of being extremely sedentary too. I learned that the main thing for a diabetic of type 2 is to restrict carbs. It was very hard for me but I wasn't going to put my baby at risk. Oddly enough, I wasn't too interested in salads when pregnant! I love salads! Also exercise helps regulate blood sugar, I just wish my aunts took type 2 diabetes more seriously. Especially after their sister passing.

Anyway I started Zuzka Light's Bunny Slope series on YouTube. They are great because it's been awhile since I worked out.

Yes, it is sad she was unwilling to help herself - but YOU can be healthy now for your baby!

So sorry for your loss. I've been thinking about my health a lot lately. Your post was helpful -- I need to make better eating choices too.
