Katsolo's Journal, 03 February 2024

Happy weekend, no rain at the moment, finally, but so much to do and it starts raining again tomorrow. About to enter into a three week insanity stretch at work, may schedule some time off after because one of my goals this year is to use all of my “new” vacation days and maintain a healthy reserve in the bank. Supposed to “check in” over the weekend. Boo.

Rolling off a week of chili and totally over it. That said, finding myself having to plan food more carefully because no matter what they say, everything is much more expensive and I don’t like that feeling because it’s putting my goals out further. I’m also experiencing a burnout on chicken, but it’s not realistic, or healthy (mercury), to eat tuna every day. The other thing happening is that fresh fruit is crazy expensive and I live where it’s grown. I do have a tree full of oranges, so will harvest some of those for myself instead of putting them all out by the curb. My tree will give about 100 oranges each year, problem is that they all ripen at once and you have to sort them carefully so as not to bring in bugs or rot. Leave them on the tree and the wildlife will go after them. They’re also about 1/3 the size of the oranges they sell in the store. Not complaining, just explaining. I don’t think I’ll see any bananas this year as I didn’t get a bloom. Going to have to reconsider some stuff, quit wasting time and make better choices as far as thinking ahead.

We did a long walk last night with a cold wind and glad I wore my rain jacket because it’s really good at keeping the chill out. Had a feeling everyone in the world would be out and they were, which is nice. Good to be able to say hi and get back to it. Going to cut this short and walk dogs, they’re wild this morning.

Wifey, you and sk get to enjoy lush green forest trees all year round. I really miss that sometimes.

Great photos! I am enjoying the nice day today down here. We are headed to other sisters in Diamond Bar tomorrow and home on Monday. Am watching weather closely. My husband went to store yesterday in CV and he spent $90 on hardly anything...it was crazy! My sister has an orange tree and a mandarin tree so we have been picking those. Oranges are hard to peel but yummy to eat. Enjoy this beautiful day Kat, hope it allows you to walk the pups!🩷🩷

Bananas and pineapple are still cheap. Guess that’s what I’ll be eating for a while. Also bought some Cheerios for snacks. We’ll just make do with what we can. Just to make it clear, I’m not in dire straights, I am just trying really hard to save up so I can retire as early as possible rather than at 72. And when I’m pissing too much money away at the grocery store, it’s distressing.

Hi Diana! Took a gorgeous long walk this morning, going to take a shorter one this evening. Glad you’re making the most of your travel and getting to see family.

The city I live in Kat is known as ‘the city of trees.’ Come visit. 😉😘

I really pay attention to grocery prices as well. I used to stock up and keep the pantry and freezer full. Now I don't want to waste anything so just buy enough for a few days, especially fruits and vegetables. I bought just 2 bananas the other day to have with oatmeal for two days. Some things I snack on last quite awhile. I usually have one or two tablespoons of pumpkin seeds a day. I buy a large package of cheese sticks at WinCo because it's cheaper than the other grocery stores. I sill won't pay $6 for a loaf of bread or box of cereal but buy them when they are on sale. Otherwise I just accept that I'll probably spend $40-$60 for a "quick" trip to the grocery store.

Wifey, I think yours is the only province I haven’t visited yet. Bucket list for sure. I got as far as Northern Maine and Vermont, but never actually crossed the border.

No way Kat. I doubt you’ve been to Newfoundland either???? That’s the island and province I’m from originally but have been here now almost 21 years. Please tell me. I’m so curious now. Not many Americans have been to almost every province.

Looks like you are in FL? If so, I found the food outrageously expensive when I stayed for a month last year (I'm from N.H.). I said the same thing, 'isn't food grown here'? I found a nearby Aldi quickly, and that helped $ wise. Also, Strawberry festivals will be coming soon. I bought extra and froze some when there. What the heck is going on? I remember it being much cheaper there, Publix prices are out of control and the Walmart neighborhood stores I found yucky.

Yeah, they keep saying an 8% increase in food prices but it's more like double.
04 Feb 24 by member: AncientHippie
Morticia, I read that as “children”. 🤣 and yeah, prices are up more than 8%. I shop with a list and the cost of the same items, more or less, has doubled over the past two years. Thankfully, my employer gave me a 200% raise last year…. Oh wait, that didn’t happen, so we tighten the proverbial belt. Even dog food costs a bit over 10% more. That’s still for the dogs, but it’s something that doesn’t vary.
