AlgaeGirl's Journal, 01 June 2009

After the end of a sort-of stressful weekend (there was talk of the stagehands going on strike), I decided to weigh in and contemplate my past few days.

Once again, my calorie intake seems to be up. Well, up from what I started from. At the beginning, I was averaging about 900 - 1100 calories a day. Now I seem to be up between 1200 - 1600. And yet, I'm still slowly dropping the pounds.

I tried going to a gym last year and felt it was a big fat waste of my time and money. Different trainers told me different things and all I got was conflicting advice. Plus, all the trainers told me I couldn't use the stationary bikes at the gym because I rode my bike to the gym, then rode to work, then rode home. I was only allowed to use the treadmill and the elliptical. And I hate the elliptical. HATE IT!

I've added weights to my upper and lower body workouts. I train at home now. I'm using 3, 5 and 7 lb weights, depending on what part of my I'm working. I try to work out at least 45 minutes, 4 days a week. Plus, I ride my bike to work six days a week and try to do 20 minutes of yoga on those days. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't.

I still have to work on my eating habits. I love food. And sometimes I don't always make the best food choices. It's always interesting when you plug your food into the diary. You think you've absolutely gorged yourself - you feel like all you've is eat all day - and yet, you've only consumed 1300 calories. Conversely, there are those days where you feel like you've starved yourself, and lo and behold, you've consumed 1300 calories! Choices, choices, choices.

This week may not be the best of my weight loss journey. I've booked the weekend off to spend with my boyfriend. We've got lots of fun, non-food related, stuff planned. But we are hosting our annual "Wii and Cheese" party this Sunday. And, you guessed it, there will be video games, tonnes of food and drink, and lots and lots of cheese! I'm gonna have to be careful. But it's going to be so much fun!

I am not sure I understand the idea of not using the stationary bike. You may have heard this quote...they asked Eddie Mercxx the famous Belgian cyclist what the average cyclist could do to get better and he said two wonderful words..."Ride Lots". Keep adding the weights they really help burn and don't worry about the bit more Kcals in the diet calendar. I am becoming proficient at the slow loss. To me if at the end of the day that little arrow is Green...you have accomplished something. A friend of mine who diets off and on came up with a saying that helps me when I want to let that arrow go Red..."An ounce less is better than an ounce more". Those little things like staying in control at your cheese thing add up to be huge things...bear in mind I didn't say not eating cheese I said staying in control. You can plan to save 500 kcals that day and have 5 ounces of cheese...that's quite a bit of cheese. You have the party planned, now take a few minutes more and plan what you are going to have to eat....start imagining what you'll eat that night and what you'll avoid. I do this to avoid that popcorn at the movies. I imagine a son sitting beside me eating popcorn and me not taking any...in my mind its easy...but, although it sound silly, it makes it easier when that actually happens. Just an idea. Glad you are riding. Jim
