I'm 44. A Stay-at-Home Dad homeschooling 3 boys 11, 13 & 15. I work part time as a Bike Mechanic and love to ride. Exercise never really seems to be my issue. I commute on my bike and love to ride as often as I can. My biggest issue is that I love food. Doesn't much matter if its good for me or bad, I can eat too much of it. I swear I can gain weight eating broccoli. There is a quote that I love to use to explain why I ride my bike so much..."It's not that I am a glutton for punishment its that my gluttony needs punishing".

Well it has been too long at a weight of 220-240. I seem to drop under the 220 mark (I have even been down to 205 as recently as Sept '08) but I can never seem to break 200. Every time I have successfully lost weight in the past it involves recording what I eat, so I'm not new to this aspect of dieting but I am hoping that some outside support can help me break through and get to my ultimate weight goals.

Good luck to everyone with their own personal goals and drop me a note if you are serious about record keeping and want to team up and help each other stay motivated.

Oh yeah if you want to talk bikes that is great too....

Emotions of weight loss
I have been as low as 175 and as high as 265 so I haven't lost as much weight as you have but I do know that there is a part of me that likes being the "big guy" and when I get down to below 190 that image of myself starts to change. I really think that is a large part of why I find it hard to stay at a lower weight. I have always been the big guy to my friends and family and if I am not him I have to be someone else..but being someone else is difficult. Inside its still me but the physical change really does change the way people treat you. I agree with folks that say that the weight doesn't magically make everything bad go away...but for me its not that, its just that the change good or bad can be un-nerving. Particularly when its change about something so fundamental as my image of myself. Maybe we can try to realize that losing the weight doesn't change WHO we are, just HOW we look and feel. I also agree you shouldn't let this stop you...in my case I am hoping as the big guy goes away this time I can get more comfortable with the small guy..I know its going to take time but I think it will happen. I hope it will for you too.

Suggested improvements I
I would like to be able to search for food just within my own Diet Calendar instead of the whole DB. Or have the option to display more items in the Multiple Add section.

Chat would be great too.

The Issue of a Single M&M
Powench, I am with you on the mindless snacking. I have not had any M&Ms in a while but I am tracking Almonds to the piece. I am getting pretty good at taking a small handful that is from 20-25 of them and if you think the M&Ms can blast you, an Almond is like 7kcals. I am sure there are times in the past where I have gone through 100 almonds without even thinking about it. So I propose a toast to TRACKING EVERYTHING....

How has gaingin weight changed your life?
I think some of the things that you are attributing to weight gain also have to do with just plain getting older. Even if I get back to my high school weight there is just no way I'll ever duplicate the energy, recovery and plain youngness that I had. I am working hard to stay realistic about what this weight loss will mean. On the sexy front, surely at this weight my wife is not as attracted to me but no way me losing weight puts her back to where we were 25 years ago.

Rent and my non-food expenses have just gone up as I have gotten older. (That said I do not have a problem staying within my means..but my means have also gotten bigger).

I think the lethargy that you talk about however is the biggest thing for me. That and simply keeping a positive/ optimistic attitude. When I am thinner or even losing weight I tend to be up for most challenges. When I'm heavy as you say it is easier to be just plain sedentary. I really think the sedentary thing is a matter of inertia. If you are in place you stay there, if you start to move it kinda builds on itself. Get back slowly. Don't try to get to that 5 days a week. Shoot for 3 or even 2. Or do something very simple like a 30 min walk..EVERYDAY.

On the more practical side like the shoes and the airplane seat..we have a waterbed and it has sides that you kinda have to climb over. When I get to the 240 there is a bit of rocking around that has to take place before I can get over that edge. The wave created is actually pretty funny, given that my wife is 117 lbs. I also really don't like beach pictures, I can deal with the ones in clothes.

Well I like the topic and sorry for the long reply, you've got me thinking and that's usually a good thing. Being engaged in anyway in the wt loss process helps.

THANKS for the idea.

The Issue of a Single M&M
You'll love this...when I was a Chemistry Major at Cornell, I actually designed and experiment to test the number of calories in a single M&M to compare with what is on the Nutritional Label. It was fun..I got to burn a bunch of them up in a device called a Calorimeter and use a thermometer that measure to 1/10,0000 of a degree F. Trust me those little suckers do not put out many Kcals unless you can eat like a thousand of them at a sitting like I can. This is usually in handfuls not one at a time...LOL.
