I am 100 lb overweight. I'm working on improving my fitness and I track my progress by timing how long it takes me to do a mile on the treadmill. I vary the speed and incline. Today I did it in 17 min 38 sec. I used to struggle to get in a mile in 18 min. My heart and my legs are getting stronger!
