Something is seriously wrong with me. No matter what I do I keep gaining weight. I think it’s a combination of my under active thyroid and my over 50 age range. I feel like crap, I look like crap. Something has to change.
197.4 lb Lost so far: 0 lb.    Still to go: 27.4 lb.    Diet followed reasonably well.
gaining 0.3 lb a week

Start off by tracking your food carefully and logging them. Use a scale to weigh and measuring spoons. Try to find out what you do. Are you getting any meds for your thyroid. I am older than you and I am losing fast so age is not necessarily a hinder here.

Lots of good luck! You can do it

Good advise from Liv. The first thing to do is figure out the intake.

Have you been tested for Type 2 diabetes?

One thing that I've found over the 30 lbs I managed to lose, is that calories don't mean a thing, it's the source of those calories. So if I want to ensure a drop, I won't have a 375 calorie Starbucks, but instead a 460 calorie Salad & Go Roasted Sweet Potato & Strawberry w/Champagne Vinaigrette. Doesn't sound logical, but that's what apparently works for this 56 year old body, with an underactive Thyroid.

What liv001 says! We all have a food/calorie checkbook and if we spend more than we put in we will loose weight. Maintenance calories is what your body needs if you do nothing all day. My number started at 2000 calories per day but now is 1800. Find your maintenance calories on any calorie counter on the net! Good shedding!😇

Ladies— if you feel that your thyroids are the issue, talk to the doctor and see if some medication adjustments are in order.

When I hit my 50's the weight really packed on also. I tried Keto, intermittent fasting, & increasing exercise. Could see some fat loss around the abdomen, but weigh refused to budge much. Am finally seeing some weight loss results by using fatsecret & counting calories. Despite what they say about keto & intermittent fasting for me the weight only comes off when I'm strict with the calorie limits. Otherwise I stall.

I'm over 50, underactive thyroid (I take levothyroxine for it), couldn't lose weight until I seriously restricted my food starting six weeks ago. And even though I stopped exercising for the past six weeks (just work in the yard a bit), I've lose 16 pounds. I eat 3 meals a day, no snacks at all, no flour or sugar or any other kind of junk food. My calorie intake is about 1500 cals on average. I'm a man, though, and maybe a woman would need somewhat fewer calories to get similar results. The hardest part for me has been giving up food between meals because I'm an impulsive eater. Good luck to you.

Karengrubaugh— first of all welcome. Second, why are you taking the iodine? What benefit do you feel it brings to the table for you?

Oops, sorry. Had to answer the phone. Are you using the iodine to treat a specific issue. Iodine is typically a safe item but like any other medication it has possible side effects and interactions with both medical conditions and medications.

Don't listen to anyone who says calories don't matter. They are what matter the most. Like Liv said, use a food scale. Track everything and try to move more. The scale will cooperate if you're consistent.

Hey! I am also underactive thyroid sufferer and 5o! I notice the same crap too.. I gain 2 pounds one day then next day I lose that 2lbs. I have no idea why my body is doing this.. SO hard losing 1 frickin pound. 50 totally sucks... I'm now trying to figure this out and the only thing now that I think I can do to keep gaining is to keep moving and eating grass..

I am a 51 year old female, hypothryroid and menopause. I have had a hypothyroid issue since 2003. I have had the crazy weight gain and then lose it, just to go back up. Felt like crap, had problems with arms and legs going numb(not diabetes).I broke my leg in 2014 and gained 60 pounds in the time I couldn´t exercise. I had my doctor tell me your numbers are good(7.85 tsh).In 2106, I went to a Endocrinologist and she told me for my age my numbers should be around 2.0-2.5. It has taken me another few years to finally get it normal. I take vitamins, extra bcomplex, tumeric-curcumin,selinium, and picolinate and eat a fresh garlic glove diced every day.It has helped a good bit. I am now on another journey to finally get those pounds off. Before my medication got me to the right levels and all the extra vitamins I weighed 101.7 kgs. Started diet and exercise June 14 weighed in today and though it has been slow and depressing to say the least , I am now at 97.7. I have been burning more than I eat with p90x. Might not be able to go full blast but from a month ago can do 90 percent of the tape now.It also helps I talked my husband into doing it with me. So if you have no one to keep you motivated talk to me. I feel like giving up when the scales laughs at me, but then I say¨How can I say I did my best if I didn´t?¨It is very hard but you can do it.Diet , exercise and the right dose of meds. Also give the extra garlic and vitamins a try. Everyone is different , hypothyroid is not a cross the board disease. Different things for different people. I just research all the time and try new things. So far hopefully this is my ¨right way for me¨¨.
