I’m not doing maintenance right. I’m discouraged. I’m looking into adding more protein but it has to be plant based protein cause I’m lactose intolerant.
You would think that it would be simple to just eat more to solve this but I have very little appetite.
Any suggestions from my FS friends that might help me....🤔

what is wrong with eggs, salmon and meat??
09 Nov 18 by member: baskington
Thanks baskington no reason for me to make things complicated. Eggs n meat are on my menu. Don’t know how to use salmon but I eat tuna regularly. Sardines are a good source of protein as well as beans etc. My issue is with lack of appetite which holds me back from maintaining my proper weight; which should be about 170. My wife Donna would like to see me gain as well as my doctor. I will keep trying. 😊

what about protein bars?
09 Nov 18 by member: Keilin_4
Thanks Keilin_4 protein bars are good but I’d have to eat 6 a day plus my meals to have a calorie surplus. To build or maintain my strength I need more protein to build more muscle but it would have to be powdered to add to my food and drinks which would provide 3 times more protein than a bar. I appreciate your advice. I will give it further thought because it’s pointing me in the right direction. And besides protein powders can be dangerous if used irresponsibly.

very fatty meat, you will get more calories with less size of the portion. If your calorie level is good and just need protein, then the lean steak or roast is great too, much smaller portion gets you the protein. tuna does not have as much calories and salmon fresh is a great source of protein, they are close in protein when canned. the pouches are great too, you eat pouch or canned wild salmon the same way as tuna. I only use the wild type salmon in oil, more fat and calories but it comes wild in water too. Beans are very filling so it is harder to eat a ton of those, much easier to eat meat.

If you don’t mind shakes, Huel is plant based, it’s actually vegan. It tastes like bland oatmeal and for two scoops it’s 500 calories, that’s adding water.

is that high protein msEra? I did not think of protein shakes to help up him

Whey protein isolate is so filtered its supposed to not cause issues. But I can't speak from experience...

A really great plant based protein shake is orgain!! you can also mix extra stuff into it for extra calories/protein/fat/whatever you need. Some things I add sometimes are: PB2/peanut butter, plant milks, cinnamon, oat meal, etc. Its really tasty and gives that boost of protein!

First of all, there are many dairy type products out there That they have been able to remove the lactose from. There are tablets such as LACTAID that you take just before you start eating a dairy source. GOOGLE non- dairy protein sources. Lots of selections. nuts, edemame nuts are a favorite, soy , beans. If prepared and cooked properly they will not give you gas. Asparagus has a gram of protein per spear. Consider your WOE and start GOOGLING.. —- by the way, did you know that humans are the only species that continue to drink milk in adulthood. Almost all people are lactose intolerant to some degree. It is a genetic issue . Humans stop producing the enzyme required to digest milk at age 8. Some people tolerate it better than others.

Have you seen a doctor/allergist? Many people (and doctors) confuse lactose intolerance with milk allergy. The 1st is a milk sugar issue, the second is a milk protein issue. So, if you have problems with plain yogurt, it's likely a milk allergy. If you have an issue with plain milk, it may be either. The problem occurs when you have a delayed reaction, such as when histamine 2 is involved- this causes a reaction several HOURS after an offending item is eaten. By the time you react, you may have eaten 3 more meals! Histamine 1 can cause trouble within 15 minutes. Also, allergies are like legos, they have to stack high enough to cause your body to react. So, if 3 plants are in bloom that you are highly allergic to, they might be equal to 3 legos each, but a minor allergy, like to peaches (yes, that's a thing!) might set you off. But on a low pollen day, 3 peaches later & I'm still fine. This may cause you to think you are NOT allergic to a food, just because you don't have consistent symptoms. My point, & I do have one (thanks Ellen) is to see a doctor if you have any issue with foods. Allergy testing is super cheap, covered by insurance, and a great way to stay healthy. Elimination diets are really poor substitutes (see comments about legos above). Your issue with protein: I eat a variety of seeds, nuts, & whole grains. You can throw them in your cereal, make a smoothie, munch them out of hand, etc. I don't recommend ANY animal protein unless you raised it yourself & know exactly what it ate, what drugs were in it, etc. Too much garbage in our food today. Best to leave it out of your body. I only eat eggs from my own chickens, for example. They get organic feed, no drugs, lots of sunshine & love. It really matters.

Well thanks everyone. Reg. milk 🥛 causes me bloating, same ith ice cream 🍦 and other dairy products so I drink Whole Lactade. It doesn’t take much dairy to make me feel ill so I avoid it. If I cook milk in a pot on the stove for a couple of minutes it breaks down the lactose and I can drink it safely. I really appreciate all the ideas and suggestions you guys are so helpful. I’m not so down anymore cause y’all have been so supportive and helpful. I’m very active, always on the go, and enjoy hard work. So it no surprise that I’m stuck with a calorie deficit for now. I’m gonna keep working on it.

well as a vegan and someone with dairy issues, I'd highly recommend picking a plant based protein. it's way healthier

humans don't need dairy and most of us have lactose problems. there are many other sources of protein and calcium that are not dairy based

Another thing you might be interested in learning about is what makes a protein a “COMPLETE” essential protein. Meats are complete, vegetable sources can be made complete proteins if you learn how to combine foota so that they complete each other. For instance garbonzo beans are a wonderful source of protein and when combined wth tahini make a complete protein equal to meat. And, tahini and garbonzo together make humus. Coincidence? I think not. Our ancient forefathers were much brighter in some areas than we are. Anyway— GOOGLE complete proteins. Super interesting what is out there to be learned. Good nutrition requires more than the simple knowledge of the big three macros

I’m encouraged by all the support. Thank you all. What a great FS family. It’s 4am & time for my ☕️ It’s 40 degrees and today is a light weight training day along with other chores. Soon I want to finish the story of my trip to New Orleans 🤔

It turned out my problem with milk was the casein, although calcium gives me trouble as well. Terrible sick headache. I can get away with normal servings of cheese but not a glass of milk or calcium supplements. But I can eat whey protein (30 g) daily okay. 60 g serving is difficult. Just additional information.
